Starting System Trouble Diagnosis
Introduction
Diagnosis of starting system problems is
usually straightforward may be electrical or
mechanical. The starting system requires little
maintenance. The battery should be fully charged
and connections kept clean and tight.
Introduction
The common complaints concerning the
starting system generally fall under four categories,
these are: no-crank, slow cranking, starter spins but
does not turn the engine and excessive noise.
Introduction
A systematically approach to diagnosing the
starting system will make the task easier. Before
performing any test on the starting system, first
begin with the visual inspection of the circuit.
Repair or replace any corroded or loose connection.
Visual Inspection
of Starting System
Visual Inspection
A visual inspection of the starting system can
save you time and effort by uncovering obvious or
simple and easy-to-fix problems.
Visual Inspection
The battery contains sulfuric acid. Take
precautions to avoid possible injury or damage to
the vehicle:
 Remove rings, wristwatch and any other jewelry
that might contact the battery terminals before
beginning the inspection.

precautions to avoid possible injury or damage to
the vehicle:
 Wear safety glasses and protective clothing to
protect yourself from acid.
Include these components in your inspection
 Battery
 Ignition Switch
 Starter
 Park/Neutral or clutch start switch
Battery
 Inspect the battery for external damage to the case
or the cables, corroded terminals and loose
connections.
 Check the battery’s state of charge. Charge if needed.
 Check the electrolyte level and top up with distilled
water if needed.

Low Maintenance Battery
Ignition Switch
 Inspect the ignition switch for loose connections
and damaged wiring.
 Confirm that the battery voltage is available at the
solenoid switch with the ignition switch set to ON and
the clutch switch or neutral start witch closed.
Ignition Switch
 Inspect the ignition switch for loose connections and
damaged wiring.
 Confirm that the battery voltage is available at the
solenoid switch with the ignition switch set to ON
and the clutch switch or neutral start switch closed.
Ignition Switch
 If you suspect the ignition switch is faulty, use a
remote starter switch and jumper wire to confirm
starter operation.
Take Note:
 If you connect the jumper wire from the battery to ST
terminal, please do not longer attached it to the ST
terminal and disconnect after 10 seconds.
Park/Neutral/Clutch Start Switch
 Conduct a voltage drop test to verify proper
operation (max. 0.1 volts drop)

Starting System Troubleshooting
This is the system responsible in cranking
the engine by means of a cranking motor when
starter. Its function is important that it must be
properly maintained too.
