BOILER
 Introduction
1. This is an example of water tube boiler and is
used in stationary and marine engine.

2. The efficiency of this boiler is much greater

than that of the fire tube boiler.

3. This boiler is used when pressure is above

10bar and steam generating capacity is required
higher then 7000kg/hr.
Characteristics of boiler
Horizontal.

Multi-water tube .

Externally fired.

Natural circulation of water .

Forced circulation for air and hot gases.

Solid as well as liquid fuel fired.

 Construction

1. It consist of
inclined water
tube, steam and
water drum , a
mud box and
super heater as
shown in figure.

down take

3. This headers are connected to a inclined water
tubes

4. The water tube inclined to the horizontal about

15˚.

5. The baffles plates are provided in order to make

circulation of hot gases in sine wave form.

6. A damper is fitted at back of the boiler to

regulate draught .
Working

1. The water is fed into the drum through the feed

check valve.

2. Due to gravity , water passes through the short riser

tube.

3. Then water collects in the drum . Initially one half of

the drum is filled up with water.

4. The baffles plates make flow of hot gases in sine

wave form.

5. The damper control the flow of air into the furnace.

6. Water is heated by hot gases coming from furnace.

Due to heating of water density of water decreases.
Low density water move upwards in water tube and
finally water converted into the steam.

7. This cycle repeat continuously .

8. The steam flows in superheater tubes and is finally

taken out through the main steam stop valve and
supplied to the engine when needed

9. In the end of the process mud collector is provided

to remove the mud particles through a blow down
cock.
Advantages
The steam generation capacity of the
boiler is very high about 2000 to 40000
kg/hr.

Replacement of defective tubes is easy.

Boiler is required less space area compared

to fired tube boilers.

It is used in power station for generating

large quantity of steam.
