SPACE TRAVEL ECOLOGY
Ecology that concerns with the relationship between
life and it’s environment.
Astroecology concerns the relationship between life n
resources in space.
Available space is a resource throughout the universe.
Spaceflight is an application of astronautics to fly
spacecraft into or through outer space, either with or
without humans on board.
TYPES OF SPACE
THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF SPACE :-

REAL SPACE
MEASURED SPACE
VIRTUAL SPACE
TYPES OF SPACES….
REAL SPACE
Actual objects in actual physical space.
MEASURED SPACE
The representation of that space in the computer n the
representation of objects from sensor data etc.
VIRTUAL SPACE
Electronic spaces created to be portrayed to users ,but
not tied explicitly to the real world
TYPE OF SPACE TRAVEL
THERE ARE 4 TYPES OF SPACE TRAVEL
FLY BYS
ORBITERS
LANDERS
ROVERS

LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM
Life support system are an integral part of deep space
habitation capability.

 Life support system includes :-

 Monitoring atmospheric pressure
 Oxygen levels
 Waste managements
 Water supply
 Fire detection n suppression
 Air
 Air temperature
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL & LIFE
SUPPORT SUBSYSTEM
It is also known as ECLSS.
A spacecraft orbiting peacefully in space is perhaps
the ultimate EG. Of an isolated system.
We’d prefer the spacecraft’s average temperature to
stay nearly constant, a condition called Thermal
Equilibrium.
Main job of the thermal control part of the ECLSS is
to regulate & control the amount of heat that gets in,
gets out and moves around a spacecraft.
HEAT OUT = HEAT IN + INTERNAL HEAT
ECLSS
PROBLEMS OF ECLSS
There are 2 problems noted in ECLSS :-
THERMAL CONTROL
The major concern for unscrewed spacecraft.

LIFE SUPPORT
LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM IN SPACE
TRAVEL
A life support system is the primary and backup components
of a spacecraft that address the core needs of human life.

7 BASIC COMPONENTS OF A LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM:-

1. Potable water supply through water reclamation.
2. Food supply.
3. Breathable cabin air supply.
4. Air pressure control.
5. Air temp. regulation through a heat exchanger.
6. Human waste management and waste disposal.
7. Fire detection and suppression.
COMPONENTS TO SUPPOR T ECLSS .
Crew compartment cabin pressurization .
Cabin air revitalization.
Water coolant loop system
Active thermal control system
Supply n wastewater
Water collection system
Wastewater tank
Airlock support
Extravehicular mobility units
Crew altitude protection system
Radioisotope thermoelectric generator cooling n gaseous
nitrogen purge for payloads.
WATER RECYCLATION IN LIFE
SUPPORT SYSTEM
It is reclaimed from a urine processor and humidity
control unit.
Water is cleaned, and given right back to astronauts for
drinking.
This loop system still requires an additional amount of
water input but are increasingly efficient based on
chemical reactions but will have to be 100percent efficient
for future space travel including missions to MARS.
The system that carry out this reclamation are a critical
component of the onboard life support system.
FOOD UTILIZED IN A LIFE SUPPORT
SYSTEM
Food cannot be produced efficiently in space.
Food must always be shuttled up to the space station
to feed astronauts.
The system that address the human solid waste that
comes from metabolizing food is also a part of the lifev
support system.
ORIGIN OF LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM
Space is a hostile environment in which humans were
not meant to survive; life support systems have thus
been necessary from the very beginning of human
space exploration.
Yet though human needs have not evolved, the system
utilized to address them have become increasingly
advanced n integrated as long duration spaceflight
mission became.
ECLSS
CONTROLLED ECOLOGICAL LIFE
SUPPORT SYSTEM
CELSS.
Are self-supporting life support system for space
stations & colonies typically through controlled closed
ecological systems .
SUCH AS :- 1. Bio Home
2.BIOS-3
3.Biosphere 2
4. MARS Desert Research Station
5.Yuegong-1
ORIGINAL CONCEPT
The aim of CELSS is to create a regenerative
environment that can support and mmaintain human
life via agricultural means.
CELSS was 1st pioneered by the Soviet Union during the
famed “SPACE RACE” in the 1950s-60s.
 Originated by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and furthered
by V.I. Vernadsky .
 The 1st forays into this science were the use of closed ,
unmanned ecosystem ,expanding into the research
facility is known as the BIOS-3
COMPONENTS OF CELSS
Air revitalization
Food/consumable production.
Waste- water treatment.

CLOSED V/S CONTROLLED

Closed systems are totally self –reliant , recycling everything indefinitely with no external
interaction. The life of such a system is limited ,as the entropy of a closed system can
only increase with time.
Eg :-earth

Controlled systems , by contrast, depend on certain external interactions such as periodic

maintenance.
Eg :- ISS

EXOBIOLOGY

The branch of biology that deals with the possibility

and likely nature of life on other planets or in space
with the effects of extraterrestrial environments on
living organisms.
EXOBIOLOGY
EXOBIOLOGY BASED ON :-
1. Cosmic evolution of biogenic element and
components.
2.Periodic evolution
3.Early evolution of life in unicellular life.
4.Evolution of advanced life.
