The Effect of Green Light

on the Growth of Spike

Moss Fern(Selaginella)
GROUP 2
1. What is the effect of green light
on the growth of spike moss fern?
2. How does the green light affects
the growth of spike moss fern?
The objectives of this research are;
1) to determine the effect of green light on the growth of Spike
Moss Fern,
2) to investigate the survival rate of ferns on different colors of light,
3) to identify the benefits of light’s color on the growth of plants,
4) to study the different colors of light,
5) to discover new ways how to make plants grow faster and
healthier.
INTRODUCTION
Spike moss (family Selaginellaceae), a mossy or fernlike
seedless vascular plant family of over 700 species in the
order Selaginellales. Selaginella is the only genus in the
family. They are found all over the world, but are most
common in the tropics. Many are forest plants; some grow
on trees, while others thrive in dry or semi-dry conditions
(Britannica, 2020). This plant needs 2-3 weeks in order to
fully grow. This study focuses on the effect of green light on
the growth of spike moss fern.
Green light is the least effective for plants because
they are themselves green due to the pigment
Chlorophyll. Different colored lights help plants achieve
different goals. Blue light, for example, helps
encourage vegetative leaf growth. Green light, Red
light, when combined with blue, allows plants to
flower. But since fern does not flower, we don’t expect
it to this study.
HYPOTHESIS

H0: The Spike Moss Fern grows slowly on a

green light.
H1: The Spike Moss Fern grows fast on a
green light.

PROCEDURES
We planted two 3 inches spike moss fern.
We created one miniature green house covered with green
cellophane for the other one and placed it there and the
other one to the normal light.
We watered the fern 20 ml once a day for 2 days.
We observed the plant and we gathered data.
