Agenda
• There are several reasons why a soldier may desire to rejoin the military
after their release.
• One may choose to reenlist for financial, insurance, or other advantages.
• A Soldier's individual ROW opens 15 months prior to their contractual ETS
date, and continues through 90 days prior to their ETS (ArmyReenlistment,
2020).
• Retention operates on two fiscal years simultaneously:  the present fiscal
year and the next fiscal year.
• Reenlistment code and separation code determine the soldier’s eligibility.
Army Re-enlistment
• Re-entry or reenlistment (RE) codes determine whether a service member is eligible to
rejoin the military.
• Separation code informs recruiter what they must establish to get one back into the military
and may affect whether or not your case will be pursued.
• One may not be eligible with a RE-2 re-entry code unless  they fulfill specified requirements,
such as retaking the ASVAB or meeting branch height requirements (Veteran, 2022).
• An RE-3 code indicates that a soldier is unable to reenlist due to a circumstance or scenario
mentioned in their separation code.
• Prior service members take one of three specialized courses if they have not already
finished U.S. Marine Corps Basic Training, U.S. Air Force or U.S. Navy Special Operations
Forces training, Army Basic Combat Training, or U.S. Air Force Security Forces training
(Veteran, 2022).
Summary
• An honorable discharge does not automatically qualify a service
member for reenlistment.
• Separation code, in conjunction with RE code, influences
one's reenlistment eligibility and the ease with which one may get the
necessary reenlistment waivers.
• Some recruiters may be reluctant to accept one's case, while others
may specialize in assisting veterans to re-enlist.
• One may rejoin the Army with little difficulty If one left with a RE-1 re-
entry code.
