BAROQUE
PERIOD
BAROQUE PERIOD (1400-1600)
•Derived from the
Portuguese barroco, or “irregularly
shaped pearl or stone,”
•It focuses on painting, sculpture as
well as architecture.
FAMOUS BAROQUE
ARTWORKS AND
ARTISTS
1. MICHELANGELO MERISI 1571-
1610
• He is better known as
CARRAVAGGIO.
• The theme of his work is
paintings of still life and
especially of fruits.
• Carravaggio’s work were
Supper at Emmaus,
Conversion of St. Paul and
Entombment of Christ.
It represents a particular
incident, one that occurred
when Saul (later renamed
Paul) was on his journey to
Damascus to tyrannize the
Christian population.
Caravaggio's Entombment of
Christ is not a Burial because the
body of Christ is not being
lowered on to a tomb but
instead being laid on a stone
slab. Caravaggio's painting is a
visual counterpart to the Mass,
with the priest raising the newly
consecrated host with the
Entombment as a backdrop.
2. GIAN LORENZO BERNINI 1598-
1680
• Bernini was the first Baroque
artist.
• He practiced architecture
and sculpture, painting,
stage design and was also a
playwright.
• As prodigy, his first
artworks date from his 8th
birthday.
