GERUND AND INFINITIVE


Gerunds
A gerund is a verb in “-ing” form that is used as a noun. It
becomes the subject or object of a sentence.
• As the subject of a clause
Example: Cycling is good for your health.

• After a preposition
Example: I did my homework before going out.

• Verbs followed by Gerund


Example: I enjoy cooking.
EXAMPLES:
o I fancy seeing a film tonight.
o We discussed going on holiday together.
o I dislike waiting for buses.
o We finished preparing for the meeting.
o I don’t mind coming early.
o He suggested staying at the Grand Hotel.
o They recommended meeting earlier.
o He kept working although he felt ill.
o She avoided talking to her boss.
Infinitive
After an adjective
Examples:
o The new computer is really easy to use.
o I'm happy to see you.
o She was right to leave early.
o They were wrong to spend so much money.
o The teacher was careful to speak clearly.
Infinitive
After certain verbs (with to)

Example:
o He refused to pay the bill.
o She plans to buy a new flat next year.
o I hope to pass the exam.
o They are learning to sing.
o I want to come to the party
