INERTIA (NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTION

● Newton’s First Law states that an object will remain at rest or move at
uniform velocity unless acted upon by an external force.

MASS VS INERTIA
● The bigger the mass of the load, the bigger the impact of inertia
EFFECT OF INERTIA
Steel Sructure Of Lorry
● A steel structure is fitted in the space between the driver
and the load of timber lorry .

● This steel structure prevents the logs from moving

forwards and knocking against the driver compartment
when the lorry suddenly stop.

RAINDROPS
Raindrops
●Raindrops on an umbrella are in motion
as the umbrella rotates.
● When the umbrella stops rotating, the
inertia of the raindrops causes the
raindrops to continue in motion and leave
the surface of the umbrella.

Oil tanker truck

Oil tanker
Oil tanker trucks have large inertia. In
fact, an oil tanker truck has its storage
tank divided into several separate tanks.
The separated tanks reduce the impact of
the inertia of the petrol.

Roller Coaster
Riding a Roller Coaster

moving
When the carriage of the roller coaster changes its direction of
motion suddenly, the inertia of the riders keeps them in their
original state of motion.

Precautions
The safety system ensures the riders remain in their seats and
are not thrown out during the motion.

CAR
Driving a car
Moving

● When a car stops abruptly, the driver and passengers

in the car are thrown forward because of inertia.

Precaution

● Seat belts prevent them from being thrown forward and

hurting themselves.
QUICK
QUESTION
MOVING TOY CAR
The toy car is moving towards a
stationary obstacle.
● 1. state what will happen to the pencil box when the car hits the
obstacle.
● 2. Compare with the effect observed if the car moving at higher
velocity
1. state what will happen to
the pencil box when the car
hits the obstacle.
● The pencil box will continue moving and leave
the toy car.
● This is due to inertia, the moving object will
remain moving at uniform velocity.
Compare with the effect
observed if the car moving at
higher velocity
● The pencil box will move with higher
velocity and land further from the
obstacle.
