they get from the environment where they are nurtured. This is based on the theory of Maria Montessori which she also referred to as “the absorbent mind”. At their young age, children can collect tons of information ranging from self-learned knowledge to environment induced knowledge. Though they might have stored different information at such young age, some of this information is not basis to school learning. As the children enter Kindergarten, they manifest their own abilities during the first quarter of the school-year. Some of them are fast-learners while others find it difficult to cope with the lessons, especially with the three (3) basic skills they need to learn: writing, numeracy and reading. Another aspect that they need to learn is on how they interact with one another in a classroom setting. In this topic, we will tackle the importance of having established programs/projects that aim to enhance the study habit, skills development and character building of a Kindergarten learner. Included also in this are some of the classroom-based best practices implemented by the teacher in teaching basic reading and numeracy skills crafted especially for a Kindergarten class. Intervention and Remediation Programs Focused on Language and Literacy, Numeracy and Writing 1. Project BRAILLE (Beginning Reading Appraisal and Intensified Language and Literacy Engagement)
How to implement? Materials Needed
Teaching letter sounds through Video Lessons
rhymes and videos Rhymes Using flashcards for daily letter recognition exercises Flashcards
Playing games regarding letters Picture Books
to keep the learners actively engaged The Blank Slate Project Learners will be able to recognize and read simple words (in Filipino and English). A ladderized approach (using Marungko Technique and Fuller Method) that aims to teach reading from basic sounds to letter combination to enable learners to read legibly. This intervention can be also applied at home as the learners’ parents execute tutorial with the given reading materials. Their children’s performance were recorded on video and sent to the class group chat.
How to implement? Materials Needed
Learners will be given “Reading Folders with reading materials Reading Materials categorized from basic and ascending. Each learner should Folders for each Learner master the first level to be able to advance to the next. Learners’ Assessment form progress in this activity will be monitored using an assessment form made by the teacher. The Blank Slate Project
This project is also applicable to numeracy and writing, as provided
activities also depend on the capabilities of the learners from the very first day of classes onwards. Their performance are also assessed and evaluated using a teacher-made assessment/evaluation tool that follows their improvement with observation notes.
Learners assessment are done individually. This will ensure accuracy in
evaluating their performance, rather than assessing them in groups. Their level of performance should be progressive every grading period. If few learners did not meet the criteria on the evaluation form after the period of implementation, these learners will then undergo remediation programs to bridge the learning gaps.
Here is the sample evaluation tool/progress report made by the teacher:

Integration of music to learning has been proven effective in improving learners’
retention towards lessons. Being able to incorporate music with the topics being discussed will be of great help to the teacher not only in terms of retention but also it lets the learners enjoy while learning.
How to implement?
Songs must be aligned with the topic.
Materials are available for downloads in
YouTube or other browsing engines
Teachers must learn the song first before
presenting it to the class. Project NES (Numeracy Enhancement Strategies)
Learning numeracy and skills development in mathematics are equally
important as learning to read. Kindergarten learners enter school with little to no knowledge in numeracy, making it a challenge to instil counting and perform simple mathematical operations. With these challenges, the teacher implemented Project NES. It is a year-round guide in teaching Math to Kindergarten learners, most especially to struggling learners.
How to implement? Materials Needed
Learners perform number recognition through songs and rhymes/audio-visual -Audio-visual materials presentation. -Popsicle sticks, clay, blocks -Printed materials Writing and counting numbers using materials which can be seen at home or in school (i.e. popsicle sticks, blocks, clay, etc)
Provision of printed activities
Sa Bahay, Gabay si Nanay
Kindergarten learners start their journey in learning at a very young age. It is
important that their home-school teacher is someone that they are very much at ease to be around and can command them with compassion and long patience. Remedial reading, writing and numeracy activities were given to learners to practice at home with the help of their moms.
How to implement? Materials Needed
Orient parents in the group chat with their responsibility as home-school teacher -Printed materials
Provision of printed reading and numeracy
activities for each learner
Monitoring of this activity is done through
video recording and sending it to the groupchat. Note: These Intervention and Remediation programs were also based on the quarterly conduct of ECCD in Kindergarten and an action plan was crafted by the teacher to have a guide in implementing these programs within an indicated timeline.
(Refer to Intervention/Remediation Plan for the
Identified Learning Gaps in Kindergarten) Intervention and Remediation Programs Focused on Behavior and Character Development Inculcating good behavior and character to learners, especially at their young age, is as important as teaching them how to read, count and write. As a kindergarten teacher with a big class number and different characteristics of the learners, plus added mentally challenged learners, the real challenge resides in the classroom everyday. When children show unusual behavior, disruption of the discussion/activity will most likely to happen. With these instances, as a teacher, it is helpful to be creative in giving interventions that will reinforce positive behavior among learners. 1. Playtime
Social reinforcement such as playing together
helps learners control their tantrums as they become busy with something they are very interested in.
2. Songs/Rhymes/Dance Exercises
To prevent learners from acting negatively, have
them participate in a lively song and dance exercise. This will help them use their energy in a good way and will help them focus better for the activity.
