 Expressing Preference
• We use “prefer” to describe when we like something more than another thing.
Structure Example
S + prefer + noun + to + noun  She prefers coffee to tea.
S + prefer + v/ING + to + v/ING They prefer skiing to swimming. 
S + prefer + to + v + noun+ rather than + He prefers to eat bread rather than
noun. tortillas.
 Expressing Preference
• We use “would prefer” to describe present and future preferences.
Structure Example
S + would + prefer + to + v + C.  We would prefer to buy some food.
We’d prefer to buy some food.
S + would + prefer + not + to + v + C.  We would prefer not to buy some food.

Would + S + prefer + to + v + C + ? Would you prefer to walk?

 Expressing Preference
• We use “would prefer + v + rather than” to describe when we want to do something more
than another thing in the present or future.

Structure Example
S + would + prefer + to + v + noun + My sister would prefer to buy this computer
rather than + verb + to + noun.  rather than go to a trip.
 Expressing Preference
• We use “would prefer + object pronoun + v” to
describe our preferences for the actions of another
person in the present or future.
Structure Example
S + would + prefer + object pronoun + to + v. He would prefer her to give the speech.
S + would + prefer + object pronoun + not + to + v. He would prefer her not to give the speech.

Would + S + prefer + object pronoun + to + v + ? Would he prefer her to give the speech?
