WHAT YOU

SHOULD KNOW
ABOUT SKIN
CANCER
By: KIN ANDREI TRINIDAD
Skin cancer is the abnormal development of skin cells
that occurs most commonly on sun-exposed skin.
However, this frequent type of cancer can also develop

WHAT on parts of your skin that aren't normally exposed to the

sun.

IS Three main types

1. basal-cell 2. squamous-cell 3. melanoma

SKIN The main difference between melanomas and other skin

cancers is that melanoma can metastasize (spread) to

CANCE distant body sites including the lungs, liver or brain.

R?
- Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays
is the leading cause of skin cancer.

- Increased activity in the skin is caused

by UV exposure. Melanocytes, which
produce pigment that releases. Freckles
are caused by a chemical called
melanin skin that has been tanned and
burnt

- Skin cancer and other skin disorders

WHAT CAUSE such as wrinkles, rashes, and dark
SKIN CANCER? patches are all caused by UV radiation.
- Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that starts in the cells
called melanocytes. While melanoma is less prevalent
than basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell
carcinoma (SCC), it is more hazardous since it can
spread to other organs more quickly if not treated early.
- If not detected and treated early, melanoma can spread
to other regions of the body. Melanoma cells that have
spread to key organs are difficult to treat and are unlikely
to be cured. Melanoma can appear on the skin suddenly
and without warning. It can also begin in or close to a
mole or other dark spot on the skin. So Better check
yourself and your family if they have this symptoms to
have check with a medical expert.

WHY DOES MELANOMA IS ONE OF

THE MOST DANGEROUS TYPE?
WHY SHOULD WE BE
KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT SKIN
CANCER
-We've all got a lot of skin, and each one of those cells has the potential to
become cancerous at some point in our lives. Therefore, it's probably not
surprising that skin cancer is common in Philippines. It affects 1 in 50
Filipinos, and more than Hundred of thousands cases of nonmelanoma skin
cancer will be diagnosed this year, according to my research.
- Exposure to UV radiation from the sun is linked to 90 percent of
nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma instances. We can and
will save lives by disseminating information about the hazards of unprotected
exposure and urging people to inspect their skin for warning signals.
PREVENTING SKIN CANCER
THROUGH THIS SIMPLE PRACTICES!
1. Get an annual checkup.
2. Wear sunblock every day and reapply.
3. Skip the sunbathing session.
4. Avoid tanning beds.
5. Wear protective clothing.
6. Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade your face, head, ears, and neck.
7. Avoid Overexposure of any sunlight or UV Rays!
8. Check yourself! To know if you have signs of skin cancer.
WHY WE SHOULD HELP TOGETHER TO
SPREAD AWARENESS ABOUT THE
SAFETY OF SKIN HEALTH
Thousands of lives may be spared each year if people were
more aware of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer and
sought help as soon as possible, More individuals will be
aware of the various testing choices, which means more
people will be screened and fewer people will die from the
disease. People who are more aware of skin cancer may
make safer lifestyle choices. That’s why we should
encourage our people and community to be more
knowledgeable about cause (UV) and effects of skin cancer!
