RAY ARENA’S BUFFER ( CALCIUM+KH )

MONITORING AND ADMINISTRING
INTRODUCTION
• Maintaining the right calcium levels in your reef aquarium is critical for your
corals, as well as your invertebrates too. Calcium is an important part of
water hardness and it is crucial to achieve the right concentration of calcium.
• If the calcium levels are too high or too low, it can brings detrimental effects.
• Carbonate hardness or KH is important as it provides a buffering capacity to
the pH of the water. A correct value of KH provide a stabilizing effects to your
water pH.
• Some corals consume KH to build their exoskeletons which causing the
water pH levels decrease.
THE EFFECTS OF UNSTABILIZED CALCIUM AND KH

• Too high calcium - the calcium binds to carbonates and

precipitates, rendering it inaccessible for inverterbrates
and depleting carbonate hardness (KH)
• Too low calcium - slows the growth of the corals.
• Low KH - pH level tends to decrease as well.
• High KH - water has more buffering capacity and the pH
level is hard to change.
OBJECTIVE
• To apply the right dosage and • To maintain the calcium in the
frequency of calcium and kH Ray Arena upon achieving the
buffer in the Ray Arena tanks. optimum water parameters.
• To maintain the KH levels to
ensure the pH levels is
optimum.
RESEARCH QUESTION
• Are there any difference if the • Can the KH buffer maintain
amount of dosage of the KH the water pH in the tanks?
buffer affecting the water pH
majorly?
IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH

• The research will contribute on the what is the correct

amount of sample needed to maintain the water
parameters required in the tanks. This will helps on
enhancing the water parameters monitoring and also the
life in tanks.

KH BUFFER AND CALCIUM CALCULATION

KH Buffer :
Sodium bicarbonate - 1L = 38.225g / 20L = 764.5g
Sodium carbonate - 1L = 2.6g / 20L = 52g
Sodium hydroxide - 1L = 13.775g / 20L = 275.5g

Calcium :
Calcium hydroxide - 1L = 8.333g / 12L = 100g /
16L = 133.33g / 20L = 166.667g
• KH optimum range = 6.5 - 8.5 dKH
• Ideal range = 7.5 dKH
• Maximum KH dosage per day = 1 dKH
• Optimum calcium levels in tanks = 400 - 450 mg/L
• Optimum pH range = 7.8 - 8.5
• TANK 16 VOLUME = 15608 L
• TANK 17 VOLUME = 46152 L
