WHAT IS AN EARTHQUAKE???

 An earthquake is a shaking or shock of the

Earth’s surface
WHAT CAUSES AN EARTHQUAKE???????
THE WORLD IS LIKE A JIGSAW PUZZLE!!!!!!
EARTH IS MADE UP OF TECTONIC PLATES WHICH MOVES.
HOW TECTONIC PLATES MOVE
 Plates can

 diverge
 converge
 transform
As the plates try
to move, stress and
friction builds up.
Then the pressure is released...uh oh!!!!!!!!
Epicenter
Earthquake begins...
How do earthquakes happen?
1. The two plates at a plate margin
cannot move past each other easily.

2.The two plates

lock together.
Friction causes
pressure to build up.

3. Suddenly the pressure

is released and the plates
jolt into a new position. 4. This causes seismic waves.
The vibrations they cause
are called an earthquake.
Earthquake is strongest at the epicentre where the
seismic waves are produced.
HOW ARE EARTHQUAKES MEASURED?
 Seismologists measure earthquake by
Seismometers.
TSUNAMIS
 WHAT IS A TSUNAMI??????????????
TSUMAMIS
 When an earthquake occurs at the bottom of the
sea, it can push water upwards, creating massive
waves. Those waves are knows as Tsunamis.
LET’S HAVE A QUIZ ON EARTHQUAKES & GRAB SOME
SWEETS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. Earth is made up of _________ that
moves. (puzzles/plates)
2. The pressure released causes
___________waves. (seismic/fault)
3. Earthquakes are measured by
_________.
(Thermometer/ seismometer)
4. Massive waves during earthquakes
are known as _______.
(Tsunami/sea waves)
5. An earthquake is a __________on the
Earth’s surface. ( shaking/pressure)
