LP comp - L.P. Compressor
Hp comp - H.P. Compressor
RG - Regenerator
Comb - combustion chamber
IC - Inter cooler
HPT - H.P. turbine
LPT - L.P. Turbine
RH - Reheater
AL - Alternator
M - Motor
Tr - Transformer
CB - Circuit Breaker
BB - Bus bars
C - Couplings
(A) Regenarator:

 This component is used in the system to improve the efficiency of the plant.
 It consists of shell and tubes.
 It uses heat of exhaust gases from LP turbine.
 It uses heat of exhaust gases from LP turbine. Exhaust gases flow inside the nest of tubes and air
flow outside the tubes in the shell in the counter flow and heated up by exhaust gases heat.
 Thus compressed air from compressor is heated before it is sent to combustion chamber.
 Due to this heating by exhaust gases the advantages are:

1) Reduces fuel consumption

2) improves cycle thermal efficiency
 Heat transfer from regenerator is improved by:
1) increasing surface area but initial cost is increased
2) increasing the flow of turbulence but it increases pressure drop
 So the designer has to find best compromise.
(B) Intercooler:
 inter cooling means removal of heat from compressed air between the stages of
compression.
 For this, two compressors are needed
(1) Low pressure compresser
(2) High pressure compressor So we get two stages of compression.
 Intercooler cools the partly compressed air in onder to reduce volume and increases
density.
 Intercooler is thus a Heat Exchanger.
 Inter cooler therefore
(1)improves thermal efficiency
(2)Improves air rate
(3)Improve work rate
 Due to use of inter cooler the size of turbine and size of compressor is reduced
which reduces cost, space etc.
(C) Reheater:

 Reheater in between the two turbines in between HP turbine and LP. turbine.
 Combustion ganes( High pressure) come in turbine and expand there. Here two
turbines are used HP and LP.
 The exhaust gases from HP turbine come out and go to reheater.
 Gases reheated and enter into LP turbine and expand in it doing mechanical work
of turing turbine shafts.
 Reheating improves the output from the turbine due to multipal heating .
 cost increases due to additional fuel heat exchanger are therefore also employed.
 By these additional components namely:

(1)Regenerator
(2)intertercooler
(3) Re-heater the over efficiency of plant increases by about 30%.
1.3.7 Applications of Gas Turbine Plant:

1 To use in peak loads in team and hydropower plants

2 Used as stationary standby power plants.
3 As a starting plant for driving audiaries in other plants is available at cheap rate and easily
available and where there
4. As a base load power plant where fuel ole natural gas is less water available in the cheap
rate.
5 Can be used in parallel with tidal power plants.
Advantages

(1) Very high power-to weight ratio compared to reciprocating engines.

(2) Smaller than most reciprocating engines of the same power rating.
(3) Smooth rotation of the main shaft produces far less vibration
than a reciprocating engine.
(4)Fewer moving parts than reciprocating engines results in
lower maintenance cost and higher reliability availability over its service life.
(5) Greater reliability particularly in applications where sustained
high power output is required.
Disadvantages

(1) Core engine costs can be high due to use of exotic materials.
(2) Less efficient than reciprocating engines.
(3) Less responsive to changes in power demand compared
with reciprocating engines.
(4) Characteristic whine can be hard to suppress.
(5) Longer startup than reciprocating engines.
