Observation Days Prebrief

Campus Placement 2023

Objectives of Observation Days:
1. Introduce you to the clinical environment
2. Offer an opportunity to demonstrate professionalism and enthusiasm for
your profession.
3. Expand your exposure and experience of interacting with patients in
clinical environment.
4. Give you experience of interacting with professionals in clinical
environment .
5. Offer an opportunity to witness clinical knowledge been applied in
practice.
6. Give an opportunity to experience interdisciplinary working, if possible in
your setting.
What Will Happen?

You will each have 2 observation days in this placement. These will be the week commencing the
12th June and will either be the 12th AND 13th June, OR the 15th AND 16th of June.

You observation days could both be in the same setting or could be in two different clinical settings.

You might be supervised by a professional from a different professional background than yourself, on
either or both days.

You might be supervised by a non-qualified, but very experienced, member of staff.

This placement is OBSERVATIONAL. You are there to watch what happens. You may get an
opportunity to be involved in assessment or treatment, if the service allows, but this is not
guaranteed.
Practicalities

Make contact with your educator to introduce yourself, if you haven’t done so already.

Find out WHERE you are going, what the WORKING HOURS are, and what you should be WEARING. This will
be different between each setting.

Your educator will be contributing to your assessment using the Observation Day Checklist.

Don’t forget to send your educator the Observation Day Professional Checklist so they can complete this for
you. If you have more than one educator they will both need to complete this. Do this by email if at all
possible so it is easier to upload to Pebblepad (Occupational Therapy) or CPAF (Physiotherapy).
Ground Rules

Turn up on time, only take a break when you are advised you can, and do not leave early.

You need to dress professionally, following the uniform policy of your allocated service area.

Be polite in your communication at all times to patients, family members, and healthcare staff.

Ensure you act professionally at all times with patients, family members, and healthcare staff.

Comply with any health and safety policies in your allocated service area. Make sure you ask if there is anything in
particular you need to know or do in order to be safe.

Show enthusiasm for your professional role and this service area, even if you are not sure if it’s a setting you want to
work in when qualified. Be particularly wary if you are with someone from a different professional group - be courteous
and respectful, and show interest in their role.
Your Tasks

You need to complete these three tasks on your observation days and submit them to PebblePad (Occupational
Therapy) or CPAF (Physiotherapy).

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the patient journey in this clinical area. This can take any format, written,
voice note, screencast, or something creative.
2. Speak to a specific patient to explore their personal experiences of their healthcare journey. Identify your
professional role in their journey, if possible. This should be summarised in a written reflection.
3. Ask your educator(s) to complete this observation day feedback form. If you have had a different educator on
both days you will need to ask them both to complete the form, so you have two forms to submit.

Please ensure this is all submitted by the end of the day on the 21st June.
