Formation of Tumour

BY: RITHANYAA RAMESH

What is mitosis
 A type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same
number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary
tissue growth.
Why mitosis is important
Mitosis is important because it helps in the growth and repair of the cells
Based on the picture shown, whenever an accident occurs or whenever an arm is bruised,
the old skin cells try to repair and new skin cells form. Therefore, a scar would be left over
after the injury. The process of mitosis generates new cells that are genetically identical to
each other. Mitosis helps organisms grow in size and repair damaged tissue.
Why mitosis is important
Mitosis is important for immune responses:
In mitosis, the
number of cytokines proteins is increased during the mitosis stage of cell division. Therefore the
blockade of cell cycle in the mitotic phase may results in increased immune resistance that can further
help the cancer cells in evading immune attack. A type of protein that is made by certain immune and
non-immune cells and has an effect on the immune system. Some cytokines stimulate the immune
system and others slow it down. They can also be made in the laboratory and used to help the body
fight cancer, infections, and other diseases.
Formation of tumour
Tumour is formed when cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their
place. Sometimes this orderly process breaks down, and abnormal or damaged cells grow and
multiply when they shouldn't. These cells may form tumors, which are lumps of tissue. Tumors
can be cancerous or not cancerous (benign).
What is the effect of uncontrolled cell
division
• A tumour  is an abnormal mass of tissue that forms when cells grow and divide more than they should
[uncontrolled cell division] or do not die when they should.
• Uncontrolled cell division occurs when a tumor suppressor gene is inactivated by a mutation resulting in
the protein that it encodes is not produced or does not function properly, and as a result, uncontrolled
cell division may occur. Such mutations may contribute to the development of a cancer.
Formation of cancers
• Cancers are formed as a result of uncontrolled mitosis. The cells divide continuously until they form tumour which is
an irregular mass of cells.
• Cancers begin when there is mutation in the genes that control cell division. The mutated genes are called
oncogenes.
• Any agent that causes cancer is called a carcinogen
• Not all tumours cause cancer. Some tumours are benign, it does not spread as much from the original spot. Some
tumours spread across the body and attack the tissue. Metastasis could also occur as the tumours spread to other
parts of the body.
