• Happenings data
• The internal records system supplies results data, but the marketing
intelligence system supplies happenings data.
A company can take eight possible actions to improve the quantity and
quality of its marketing intelligence:
1. Sales force - Train and motivate the sales force to spot and report new
developments. Eg. Washing machines
2. Marketing Intermediaries- Motivate distributors, retailers, and other
intermediaries to pass along important intelligence. E.g. ConAgra /
Walmart - time saving meals - "Seasons of Mom"
3. Hire external experts to collect intelligence. E.g. Mystery shoppers
4. Network Internally / Externally
5. Customer Advisory Panel E.g. GlaxoSmithKline sponsors an online
community devoted to weight loss
6. Government data sources E.g. Census
7. Purchase data from research firms E.g. Nielsen

• There are five main ways marketers can research competitors’ product
strengths and weaknesses online
a) Independent customer reviews
b) Distributor / sales agent feedback sites -Eg. Amazon.com
c) Combo sites offering customer reviews and expert opinions
d) Customer complaint sites - customer complaint forums
e) Public blogs / social media
