QUARTER 4 WEEK 1

• Demonstrate how places on Earth can be

located using a coordinate system. (S7ES-
IVa-1)
OBJECTIVES
✔ Define latitude, longitude and coordinate
system.
✔ Locate places using coordinates of latitude and
longitude.
✔ Recognize the importance of using coordinate
system in locating places on Earth.
DEVELOPMENT
A coordinate system is a grid used to identify
locations on a page or screen that is equivalent to
grid locations on the globe. The most common
coordinate system used is by using longitude and
latitude.

THE GLOBE

LONGITUDE
LATITUDE
LONGITUDE
✔ Imaginary vertical lines on
the globe.
✔ Lines of longitude or
meridians circle the earth
from north to south
✔ The movement is from the
East to West or East to west
directions.
These lines run from
THE MOVEMENT OF pole to pole of the
LONGITUDE globe and are
sometimes called the
Meridians.
EUROPE

SOUTH AMERICA
LATITUDE
✔ Imaginary horizontal lines on the globe.
✔ Specify the North and South directions of the
globe.
✔ Latitudes can also tell us how far the location is
from its starting point measured in degrees.
✔ This starting point of the latitude is called the
Equator which has a measure of zero degree.
✔ Equator is also located at the center between the
north and south pole.
THE MOVEMENT OF LATITUDE
ASIA

NORTH AMERICA
Countries located in the
equator often experience hot
climate with little seasonal
variation.
Philippines is located near
this equator.
places located in the Tropic
of Capricorn and Cancer
experience tropical climate.
Countries in the Arctic and
Antarctic Circle have to deal
with cold temperature.
