“Do you know that every art piece has
its own meaning?” It was created together with the emotion and knowledge of the author or artist. Filipinos expressed their thoughts, feelings, and struggles in many ways in either language, literature, history, art, music, or Philosophy. The Philippines is obviously rich in culture and art. Its manifestation can be bestowed in terms of the art scene and responses to socio-economic and political issues. The Filipino artists are instantly conscious of the ancestral roots trying to shun away the shadow of colonial influence. The fact that the Philippines had been colonized for several decades, thus the way of life of the Filipinos had been influenced in many ways. “WHAT ARE THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTS IN A REGION?” • Contemporary art is important in every Filipino life because every contemporary art reflects someone’s feelings, ideas or perspectives. Through contemporary art, Filipinos can express themselves observable for others. It is a means of personal expression. • The importance of arts in a regional development should not be underestimated. • Art can reflect, and recreate meanings and identities for regional communities. Artists can also communicate their region, their community, and their culture to outsiders in ways that generate interest, respect and even understanding. Every art form has an important role in our culture. The dance, whether ethnic, social and spectacular, is an important part of culture. Dancing provides pleasure and enjoyment, relaxation, and improves social life of people of all ages. SOME ART FORMS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE
• Madonna of the Slum was painted by Vicente Manansala.
This painting now belongs to the National Museum Collection. Vicente Manansala is a Filipino National Artist in Visual Arts and a Filipino cubist artist and illustrator. The Madonna of the Slum is said to be the portrayal of a mother and child from the countryside who became urban shanty residence once in the city. This image is tightly focused on the two subjects. As what you can see in the picture, a mother hugs her child with her two hands, and the child holds her mother’s face. • The background which are the houses is composed of the colors of brown and darkness which clearly shows sadness. The artist had embedded a very deep meaning behind this image and as a viewer I will interpret this image based on what my own eyes perceive. SOME ART FORMS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE
• The Andrés Bonifacio Monument,
commonly known simply as Bonifacio Monument or Monumento, is a memorial monument in Caloocan, Philippines which was designed by the National Artist Guillermo Tolentino to commemorate Philippine revolutionary Andrés Bonifacio, the founder and Supremo of the Katipunan. SOME ART FORMS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE • Allegorical Harpoon is one of the first creations by a Filipino artist in hardwood in which the sense of values is more important than the heroic representation of native ancestors. This sculpture was National Artist for Visual Arts Napoleon Abueva's entry for the XXXII Venice Biennale in 1964. It is considered one of his best abstract sculptures and is part of the collection of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. • It is an artwork with a movable, swiveling piece pegged to a rifle-shaped horizontal torso. It appears minimalist in silhouette and composition but also captures the eye with its own brand of visual complexity. SOME ART FORMS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE • Taal, Batangas is traditionally known for crafting Balisong (Butterfly knife) • A balisong, also known as a fan knife, butterfly knife or Batangas knife, is a type of folding pocketknife that originated in the Philippines. Its distinct features are two handles counter-rotating around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles. • This style of knife could be opened quickly with one hand and easily used as a weapon. It proved a common choice for self-defense and utility uses. A rich balisong tradition has been present in the Philippines for more than a century. SOME ART FORMS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE
• The "Sapatero Festival" runs from
Oct. 22 to 23, leading to the Marikina Christmas Festival aimed at promoting local shoes and footwear both here and abroad. The festival will showcase the talents of the Marikeños in performing stand- up comedy. There will also be singing contests and live band performances. SOME ART FORMS AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE • The marble sourced in Romblon, Romblon is at par with the world's best, with export quality material giving it high value to sculptures and builders around the world. What makes its special is that the Romblon marbles are mature, making it very tough. Marble is one of the most sustainable form of mining. The island is blessed with sizable deposits of raw minerals that do not run out because of its inexhaustible supply. One thing to appreciate here is the variety of colors that Romblon marble comes in, from pure white, to golden, to gray, to the rare onyx black. One thing to appreciate here is the variety of colors that Romblon marble comes in, from pure white, to golden, to gray, to the rare onyx black. “PROGRAMS AND PROMOTIONS FOR ARTS AND CULTURE IN MIMAROPA REGION” MIMAROPA Festival is an annual activity that aims to celebrate and promote the region's tourism industry. The name is an acronym that stands for the provinces, comprising the region, namely: Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan. • The first MIMAROPA Festival was held in Calapan City on November 9-15. The Provincial Government of Oriental Mindoro hosted the event. It coincided with the celebration of the 65th founding anniversary of both Occidental and Oriental Mindoro. Representatives and guests from Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Calapan City and Puerto Princesa City participated in the celebration’s activities. The festival highlighted the region’s best products through agri-trade and tourism fair, dance parade competition and search for MIMAROPA festival queen. PRACTICE EXERCISE 1:
