WHAT IS Definition

WEATHERING?

WEATHERING:
The process of wearing or being worn as a result
of prolonged exposure to the environment.

Weathering refers to the action of climate and

weather elements, animals, and plants on land
surfaces to break them down biologically,
chemically, and physically. Weathering can be a
very slow process that can last hundreds of years. It
can also be sudden, as in the case of pavement or
road damage following a cold, frosty winter.

WEATHERING

Weathering is the breakdown of rocks

and minerals at or near the Earth's
surface. It is caused by chemical and
physical interactions with air, water,
and living organisms. Due to the
variety of agents responsible for
weathering, the rate and extent of
weathering are highly variable and
depend on a variety of processes and
phenomena such as the chemical
composition of rocks, the water cycle,
tectonic uplift, and regional
biodiversity. Weathering and erosion
of rocks affects Earth's surface
features (that is, its topography), soil,
nutrients on land and in the ocean, and
the composition of the atmosphere
over thousands to millions of years,
affecting global climate and
ecosystems.

WEATHERING
No rock on Earth is strong enough to withstand the forces of
weathering and erosion. Weathering is frequently the first step in
the formation of soils because it smooths rough, sharp rock
surfaces. Weathered minerals, plants, animal remains, fungi,
bacteria, and other organisms coexist.

Weathering can be classified into two types:

chemical and physical. Acid rain is an a kind of
precipitation that contains high levels of sulfuric
acid and is primarily caused by the combustion of
fossil fuels. Wind blowing across the desert playas
causes physical weathering. This process causes
rocks to form a specific pyramid-like shape.
