BY JASMINE JOHAL
BACKGROUND
■ Augustus ( also known as Octavian) was the first emperor of ancient Rome. Augustus
came to power after assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE. In 27 BCE Augustus
“restored” the republic of Rome, though he himself retained all real power as the
princeps or “ first citizen,” of Rom emperor, following the republic, which had been
finally destroyed, which had been finally destroyed by the dictorship of Julius Caesar,
his great-uncle and adoptive father.
Interesting fact
■ What did Augustus accomplish? Augustus brought peace (“Rex Romana”) to the Greco-
Ramon world. In 27 BCE he nominally restored the republic of Rome and instituted a
series of constitutional and financial reforms that culminated in the birth of the
principate. As princeps of Rome, Augustus enjoyed enormous popularity.
Interesting fact
■ The most crucial challenges Augustus faced were during his rise to power, when he was
challenged by Mark Antony and Lepidus of rule of the empire, and then viewed as a
potential tyrant by the people and the senate. Augustus overcome the first challenge
though political ingenuity, cafting public works such as the temple containing the
famous Res Gestae of Augustus.
