1
INTRODUCTON
 The demands on video surveillance systems are rapidly increasing in
the present day. One of the first things people will want to know about
their surveillance system is whether or not they have the ability for
viewing.
 The system to be designed cannot wholly replace the role of CCTV and
IP surveillance cameras. This project can also be implemented for low
income home owners to monitor their homes at a very affordable price
 The system aims at overcome the shortcoming of the current system
which utilizes archive footage not live feed. This will increase the
efficiency of the police.

2
Problem Statement
The need to develop a cost-effective surveillance system
through innovative technology immensely influenced
the development of this project.
Facial recognition over the past few years has been used
only by going through archive footage, but this project
makes aim to use live footage to make facial recognition.

3
Justification
The system will be able to alert when a criminal is recognized in real time
and will include a website interface to display previous facial recognition
results. This data can be used by the relevant authorities in order to
increase their response time or to check any form of upgrade needed for the
system. The system will be essential in reducing crime rate and increasing
the rate of crimes solved by increasing police efficiency. The website will
have all the essential tools to be able to provide the criminal details i.e.
name and their alleged crime. It will also provide the time the system was
able to capture them i.e. recognize them. The alert will be via a text message
because the basic mobile phone is able to receive text.

4
Objectives
Main Objective
To design, implement and test a real time security
tracking system

Specific Objectives
To design facial recognition using open computer vison
To design a dynamic website for live updates.
To implement an alert system via text messages

5
Literature Review
Existing technology
Face Recognition: This is being mainly used in smart phones either for
the security or taking pictures. It is also used in security systems where
only authorized personnel are allowed access.

Surveillance: This is done by using CCTV’s. Facial recognition is used by

going through archive footage and it has a disadvantage of being slow.

Russia ( Moscow) is on the process of rolling out live recognition system

with an application to alert the police.

Literature Review
FEATURES INTRODUCED:
Dynamic website: This is to keep a record of the successful facial
recognition. It will have information on the criminal name, location and
time recognition occurred.

SMS alert system: As the basic mobile phone can send or receive text
messages, a SMS will be more efficient than an application as currently in
use by Russia

SYSTEM MODULES
The entire system modules consist of the components below:
 Raspberry Pi Model B+ ,
 RJ45 Ethernet connector,
 Pi camera module
 MicroSD card
 USB powered cable.

8
Methodology

Detect face(Haar
Raspberry Pi camera
Image cascade, HOG+ linear
module
SVM)

Compute 128-d face

Compare 128-d vector
Recognize face embeddings via deep
to known databasae
metric network

Send SMS alert Entry to website

9
1. The Raspberry Pi camera will capture the image (input).
2. The Raspberry Pi will be programmed to detect faces
through Haar cascade classifier.
3. 128-d face embeddings will be calculated via deep
metric network and compared to the known
database(face data set already in the database)
4. The face will then be recognized if there is a match from
the available face data set using LBPH.
5. An output i.e. a text message will be sent to alert of a
successful facial recognition
6. There will be an entry to the website of the successful
facial recognition
