Norway’s Future:

Art and Children

"At different moments you see with different eyes. You see
differently in the morning than you do in the evening. In
addition, how you see is also dependent on your emotional
state.”
“Because of this, a motif can be seen in many different ways, and this is what
makes art interesting."

- Edvard Munch
“It is said that children are people. But, people do
not exist without a culture…”
“...Children are people who belong to the future.
And they have the right to their own culture, their
own art and history.”

- Rafael Goldin (1920-1994), Founder Of the the

International Museum of Children’s Art Oslo
Their own history

Norway is one of many countries to adopt a
“Constitutional Bill of Rights for Children”

...and they take that very seriously.

Children have
rights.

Constitutional
RIGHTS
Norway was the first country in the world to establish an
Ombudsman for Children in 1981.
The ombudsman for children is an independent official
who is responsible for protecting the rights of children
by addressing specific complaints and by conducting general
advocacy.
Selvstendighet -Independence

National independence only dates from 1905, prior to that,

Norway existed in union with Sweden for 100 years and before
that 400 years under Danish rule.
As a result of this long-awaited independence, Norwegian
culture became something to explore and celebrate...
And Culture begins and continues...
...with children.
Selvstendighet -Independence

Norway, in a sense, is still “in creation”...

like a child,
like a work of art itself.
“...while Norwegians generally take pride in the successes of
their artists and athletes, the development of talent is not as high
a priority…”
“...as providing the opportunity for all members of society to
participate in, and feel part of, the cultural life of the
community.”

- The Arts and Cultural Education in Norway Study

Janteloven

To be Norwegian is to be from a particular local community.

-Julian Kramer, 1983

...with the most important community being, of

course, Norway herself.
May of 14th Celebrations

...it is a matter of pride in Norway that children

parading with flags,
not soldiers and tanks,
are at the heart of May of 14th celebrations...

constitution in 1814
