 INTRODUCTION

• the state has a wide variety of plants, from tropical species
to temperate, alpine and tundra ones, and is perhaps one
of the few regions to exhibit such a diversity within such a
small area. Nearly 81 per cent of the area of Sikkim comes
under the administration of its forest department. [74]
• Sikkim is home to around 5,000 species of flowering
plants, 515 rare orchids, 60 primula species, 36
rhododendron species, 11 oak varieties, 23 bamboo
varieties, 16 conifer species, 362 types of ferns and ferns
allies, 8 tree ferns, and over 900 medicinal plants.[72] [7] A
relative of the Poinsettia, locally known as "Christmas
Flower", can be found in abundance in the mountainous
state. The Noble Dendrobium is the official flower of
Sikkim, while the rhododendron is the state tree.[75]
• Delhi occupies a floral diversity of 377
genera and 551 species belonging to 90
angiospermic families. Among the genera,
Euphorbia is the most dominant genus
represented by 12 species in Delhi
flora. The most common trees that are found
here are Nilotica, Leucophlea, catechu,
modesta, butea monosperma, commonly known
as dhak, salvadora persica, cassia fistula etc.

 FLORA OF SIKKIM
• Cardamoms, oranges, apples, potatoes and ginger are grown in abundance in the state.
• The jungles in the south, are teeming with plantains, bamboos, tree ferns, walnut, sal and oak.
• Orchids also abound in areas with moderate altitudes.They are the pride of Sikkim and are about
600 species. They come in a wide variety of colours and sizes. The most popularorchids of Sikkim
are Cymbidiums, Vanda, Cattaleya, Hookeriana, Farmeri, Dendrobium Amoenum. The Nobile Orchid
has been declared as the State Flower of Sikkim
• In, the temperate zoneThe flora consist of oak, chestnut, maple, birch, alder, magnolia and silver fir.
• There are about 35 species of Rhododendrons in Sikkim and are found above the height of 10000
feeThe Rhododendron Nivale grows barely a few inches above the ground. When Rhododendron
flower between the month of April and May, it is a sight to behold with hillsides becoming shrouded in
colour. The variety Rhododendron niveum has been declared as the State Tree of Sikkim. At the
treeless altitudes above 14000 feet curious types of flowers in colours of blue, red, violet blossom
during summers just a few inches above the ground. The stones and rocks also get coloured by
lichens and mosses in amorphous pattern.
