Lady Wortley Montagu

Who is she?
 Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (née Pierrepont) was an English aristocrat, writer,
and poet
 She was born on May 15, 1689, in Holme Pierrepont Hall, Nottinghamshire,
England
 Lady Mary is known for her letters, particularly her Turkish Embassy Letters
describing her travels to the Ottoman Empire as wife to the British ambassador
to Turkey12. She is also known for introducing and advocating for smallpox
inoculation to Britain after her return from Turkey
 Lady Mary married Edward Wortley Montagu, who later served as the British
ambassador to the Sublime Porte.
 Vriolation was an early form of vaccination that involved deliberately infecting a
person with a mild form of smallpox to provide immunity. Her efforts
contributed to the eventual development of the smallpox vaccine by Edward
Jenner in the late 18th century
 Lady Mary married Edward Wortley Montagu, who later served as the British
ambassador to the Sublime Porte.
 passed away on August 21, 1762 in London
