HOW DID THE BRITISH EMPIRE BEGIN?

An ‘empire’ was a group of countries ruled over by a single

monarch or government.

The British Empire was made up of Britain and its colonies (countries ruled by
and from Britain).

The British Empire began during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603).
England and Scotland were still ruled by different monarchs at this time.

After the victory of the English navy over the Spanish Armada in 1588,
England’s power and influence increased.
This led to more overseas trade and the first settlements
of people from England in North America.
England also imported luxury goods and re-exported
them at higher prices to European countries which didn’t
have direct overseas trade links.
