Quackery
Quackery is the promotion of false and unproven health
products and services for a profit .It is a consumer fraud that
involves the practice of promoting and selling useless
products and services.
A quack is a person or company that uses a health fraud
and which usually tries hard to appear scientific. A quack
may endorse products or services with a promise of quick
cures, miracles, or unbelievable formulas.

The three forms of quackery are:


a.Medical quackery
Medical quackery includes cures, treatments, and remedies of
various health conditions that are drugless or bloodless in
nature.
B Nutrition quackery
Nutrition quackery involves promotion of food fads and other
nutritional practices that claim to be all-natural. These are
believed to have beneficial properties of multiple plants in one
product.

C. Device quackery
Device quackery makes use of
miraculous gadgets (such as dials,
gauges, electrodes, magnets, and
blinkers) that are believed to cure certain
health conditions.

Health fraud is the advertising, promotion, and sale of products and


services that have not been scientifically proven safe and effective.

The Philippine Institute for Traditional


Alternative Health Care (PITAHC) is also the
law-making body with regards to the effective
use of traditional and alternative medicine. In
fact, this has been enacted in some areas in
our country. Below are examples of the
PITAHC approved alternative modalities.

HEALTHCARE MODALITIES

Herbal Medicine the word ‘herb’ refers to any plant or


part of a plant. Thus, herbal medicine refers to the use of
plants and parts of plant like stems, roots, barks, seeds,
leaves, flowers, and fruits for medical purposes. Below
are some of the common herbal medicine:

1.Akapulko (Acapulco)
For the treatment of insect
bites, itchiness, ringworms,
infections, scabies and
eczema.

2.Ampalaya (bitter
melon)
As supplement in
treating diabetes,
burns, coughs, and
hemorrhoids.

3.Bawang
(garlic)
As supplement in
reducing blood
cholesterol level; used
also as antibacterial
drug.

4.Bayabas(guava)
Used as anti-
oxidant, anti-allergy,
anti-microbial, and
anti-diabetic drug.

5.Lagundi
(5-leaf chaste tree)
For the treatment of
cough, colds, and
fever

Alternative medicines include the following: herbal


preparations, food supplements, massage therapy, and
other medicines considered to complement regular
medicine. Alternative medicines can also be:

1.Naturopathy from the word ‘nature’ and thus, uses


natural ways to treat a patients. Physicians who practice
this kind of treatment aim to restore the balance of the
body and mind of the patients.

2.Ventosa
Ventosa is an alternative medicine in which glasses are placed on
some important points of the back of a person.

3.Reflexology
Another type of alternative medicine is reflexology. It is done by
applying pressure to the feet, ears, or hands by means of the thumb or
a particular finger.

4.Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is another form of alternative medicine


which is known to improve one’s wellbeing.
