Image-Guided Surgery or Surgical Radiology, is a subspecialty of Radiology,in which minimally invasive procedures are performed using image guidance. Some of these procedures are done for purely diagnostic purposes (e.g., angiogram), while others are done for treatment purposes (e.g., angioplasty). • Minimally invasive procedures for both diagnostic and therapeutic (treatment) purposes • Has it’s origins in coronary angiograms of the 1950’s and 1960’s • Performed by specially trained radiologists • Performed using state-of-the-art imaging guidance (X-Ray , ultrasound, ct ) • Typically accesses structures through a tiny (<2mm) nick in the skin What kind of things can be done?
• Treatment of vascular problems
• angiogram; angioplasty +/- stenting • Biopsies • Drainage of fluid collections • abscesses, kidneys or bile ducts/gallbladder • Embolization (blockage) of arteries • to stop bleeding or treat tumours, etc. • Treatment of infertility • Insertion of feeding tubes • Treatment of liver tumours These procedures can replace certain surgeries – faster recuperation than with surgery – usually no hospital admission required (done as an outpatient) – local anaesthetic used instead of general anesthesia – safe and effective Angiography catheter Angioplasty
• Angioplasty (dilating blood vessels with
