History of Telecom In India
 In early 1881, Oriental Telephone Company Limited of England opened telephone
exchanges at Calcutta (Kolkata), Bombay (Mumbai), Madras (Chennai) and Ahmedabad.

 In the year 1975 Department of Telecom (DoT) was responsible for telecom services in
the entire country after separation from Indian Post & Telecommunication.
 In1995 TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) was set up. This reduced the
interference of Government in deciding tariffs and policy making.
 The Government of India corporatized the operations wing of DoT in 2000 and
renamed Department of Telecom as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
Mergers and Acquisitions in Indian
telecom sector
Vodafone – Hutchison Essar Merger
◦ The business stated that it will pay $11.1 billion to acquire a 67 percent stake in Hutchison
Telecommunications International, a subsidiary of Li Ka-Hutchison and now known as Vodafone
India.

Reliance Industries – Infotel merger

◦ Reliance Industries, a company headed by Mukesh Ambani, acquired a 95% share in Infotel
Broadband for Rs. 4,800 crore in June 2010. The company's announcement of its 4G strategy has
already roiled the market.

◦ With more than 400 million subscribers, the combined company would become the biggest operator
in India and overtake Bharti Airtel, which now has more than 260 million people using its network.

Conclusion
 The telecom sector is seeing increased competition. It's time for Indian telecom companies to align

themselves with the new, dynamic business climate as well.

 The success or failure of next-generation communications service providers is determined on the level of

service and the capacity to draw in and keep clients.

 Customers are ready to drop services that fall short of their expectations in today's competitive market.

Customers' ease of switching from one service to another necessitates that supplier operate and provide

services at the best standards available.
