Letters that occur early in the alphabet are used to represent

constants: a, b,c,d….
and letters that occur late in the alphabet are used to represent
variables : x, y,z ……
Linear equations have no products or roots of variables and no
variables involved in trigonometric, exponential, or logarithmic
functions. Variables appear only to the first power
For convenience, choose the variables that occur last in
a given equation to be free variables
