PERCEPTION

Meaning,Characteristics,Factors influencing perception

MEANING
◦ A perception is the experience we have after our brain assembles and combines thousands of individual,
meaningless sensations into a meaningful pattern or image. However ,our perceptions are exactly replicas
of the original stimuli. Rather, our perceptions are usually changed , baised , colored or distorted by our
unique set of experiences. Thus, perceptions are our persona; interpretations of the real world.
◦ The process by which sensory information is actively organized and interpreted by the brain.
◦ The process of selecting , organizing and interpreting raw sensory data into useful mental representations
of the world.
CHARACTERISTICS
◦ Perception is selective:- To say that our perception is selective means that we do not simultaneously
attend to all the stimuli occurring around us (Lavie&Tsal,1994), On a bus you look out the window to see
how close your are to your intended stop; you do not notice colouring or cologne of your fellow
passangers. The selectiveness of perception is one of its fundamental characteristics and the process by
which we perceive some stimuli rather than others is called attention (Kinchla,1992).
◦ Perception is creative:- To say that perception is creative means that it is not a literal versions of reality
but rather something we create. Among the raw ingredients, which are determined by external stimuli.
However, perception is also determined by the habits , tendencies and style we bring to bear on our
sensations (Wehner & Stadler,1994).
◦ Perception is personal:- Our perception is to say that we see the world from our own point of view.In
the obvious sense, this assertion id trivial: we see with our own eyes, hear with our own ears, and so on.
But perception is personal in two less obvious ways.
◦ Perception is cultural:- perception is also influenced by our large social context. We can thus
characterize perception as cultural. Our culture directs our attention to some stimuli rather than
other, diclates how we group together configuration of stimuli. We are greatly influenced by our
expectations is cultural beliefs & practices. To the degree that these differ across cultures, then so
FACTORS INFLUENCING
PERCEPTION
◦ What makes perception somewhat complex is that we don't all perceive things the same way. One person may perceive
a dog jumping on them as a threat, while another person may perceive this action as the pup just being excited to see
them.

◦ Our perceptions of people and things are shaped by our prior experiences, our interests, and how carefully we process
information. This can cause one person to perceive the exact same person or situation differently than someone else.

◦ Perception can also be affected by our personality. For instance, research has found that four of the Big 5 personality
traits—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and neuroticism—can impact our perception of organizational
justice.
◦ Conversely, our perceptions can also affect our personality. If you perceive that your boss is treating you unfairly, for
example, you may show traits related to anger or frustration. If you perceive your spouse to be loving and caring, you
may show similar traits in return.
