OVERVIEW OF CULTURE

• The culture of a people is generally seen as their total


way of life
• Prior to the above, some have seen culture as the
pursuit of literature, music, dancing, fetishism and
traditional ways of doing things
• Making this presumption more narrower of what
culture actually is

• Often derogatory remarks such as ‘uncultured’ are


made
• Referring to someone who has acquired western
style of life or education
• Above presumption is untenable because culture
does not mean civilisation or acquiring certain level
of development

• Culture of a people is their total way of life


• Which is categorised/ expressed in both tangible
(material) or intangible (nonmaterial) forms
• Tangible ; food, technology, visual arts and symbols,
architecture (house), medium of exchange (money)
• Intangible; language, morals, beliefs, folklores,
festivals, music, dance

• Culture can therefore be referred as the


learned portions of human behaviour
developed as a result of his interaction with
the environment
• People are not born with any knowledge of
culture
• Is learnt by growing in a particular society
• Process of learning is termed ENCULTURATION
CULTURE DEFINED

• Linton (1940) defines culture as the sum total of


knowledge, attitudes and habitual behaviour
patterns shared and transmitted by members of a
particular society
• Tyler (1946) A complex whole which include
knowledge, belief, art, morals, customs, cuisine and
other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a
member of society

• A framework of beliefs, expressive symbols, and


values in terms of which individuals define their
feelings and make their judgement (Geertz 1957)
• Simply put culture is a way of life of a people
