Terminal Objective
At the end of the session, the participants will be guided to all Special Science
School Program Implementation.

Enabling Objective

1. Internalize the policies and guidelines for science and

technology-oriented curriculum on basic education.
2. Evaluate the criteria and admission process for special science
curriculum.
3. Assess the curriculum and instruction for special science
program.
TIME TO THINK!

Does the government

acknowledge and support
students with giftedness
especially in science and
technology?
TIME TO THINK!

Does the science curriculum

in basic education motivates
students to engage in science
and encourage them to take
science related careers?
REFLECT ON THIS!
Filipino students lagged behind other countries in the international
assessment for mathematics and science for grade 4, the Trends in
International Mathematics and Science Study 2019 (TIMSS) revealed on
December 8, 2020.
The Philippines only scored 297 in mathematics and 249 in science, which
are “significantly lower” than any other participating country. The country
also scored the lowest among all 58 participating countries for both tests.
For science, 13% of Filipino students were also on the Low benchmark,
which means they had “limited understanding of scientific concepts and
limited knowledge of foundational science facts,” while 87% did not even
reach this level.

Special Curricular Programs in Science –
a research and development project designed to
develop students with higher aptitude for science
and mathematics through the implementation of
an enhanced science and mathematics
curriculum.
Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) Program -
STE, formerly known as Engineering and Science
Education Program (ESEP), offers learners with an
enriched science and technology-oriented curriculum that
will prepare them for higher education or work in the areas
of science, technology, and engineering.
Policies and Guidelines on S&T-

Education

DO 44, s. 1995 – Establishing Provincial Science High Schools

High Schools
DO 41, s. 2005 - Implementing Guidelines in the Admission,
Retention, Grading System and Selection of Honor Students in

Application Process for
II. Special Curricular Programs
in Science
III. Learner Admission
Process
• Admission process for SSES is open for all incoming
Grade 1 pupils while RSHS, LSHS, and STE is open
for all incoming Grade 7 students.
• The admission process is divided into two: (1) pre-
screening (school-initiated); and (2) admission exam.
• SCP implementers have the prerogative to design their
own pre-screening process to shortlist the aspirants.
The shortlisted aspirants shall then be subjected to
admission test initiated by the RO.
III. Curriculum and
Instruction
Public School Research Centers and
Laboratory Management
1. creating JHS Research Club (for students);
2. creating Scientific Review Committee (an ad hoc
committee in school that reviews all research papers for
outside presentation and/or publication, could be
students’ Science Investigatory Projects and/or teachers’
action and/or basic researches); and
3. purchasing laboratory equipment and or apparatuses
related to the chosen research field
Any question?
1.How does the policies and guidelines for science and
technology-oriented curriculum on basic education
support the giftedness of students in area of science?
2.Are the criteria and admission process for special
science curriculum fitted to develop the country’s
development in the field of science?
3.What are the strength and weakness of the curriculum
and instruction for special science program?

orchestra, not the trainer in the circus.”
