Full infinitive (to infinitive)

• To express purpose
• She bought flour to make a cake
• After adjectives, in the negative ”not” goes before “to”
• I´m amazed to hear that they’re going out with each other
• It’s impossible not to laugh when you watch this movie
Full infinitive (to-infinitive)

We use it after verbs such as advise, expect, He refused to help me


hope, offer, plan, promise, refuse, want
We use the -ing form (Gerund)

• As a noun (as the subject or object of the sentence)


• Swimming is a good form of exercise
• John doesn’t enjoy reading
• Usually after the verbs like, love, dislike, hate, enjoy, prefer, etc.
• John likes going to the supermarket
We use the –ing form

• After prepositions, in the negative “not” goes before the –ing form
• Thanks for inviting me to your wedding
• I’m bored with not going out
• He is worried about failing his exam
