HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF

CEBUANO LITERATURE
(SUGBUANONG KATITIKAN)
I. Pre-colonial/ Ancient

 Manila Imperialism- their main concern and focus was Manila only.
Social Realism- is an artistic movement that depicts the daily struggles of the
working class.
Realism- a style of painting that depicts the actuality of what the eyes can
see.
III. American Colonial
Period
• Cebuano Literature- refers to the body of oral and written literature
speakers of Cebuano, the mother tongue of a quarter of the country’s
population who lives in CEBU, BOHOL, SIQUIJOR, NEGROS ORIENTAL
and other parts of LEYTE and MINDANAO.

• While the majority of Cebuano writers are from the Visayas and Mindanao
region,,, the most recognized Filipino outlet for them, including the BISAYA
Magasin, is based in Makati City in Metro Manila, while there is also a lovely
Cebuano community of writers in the language which is based outside the
country, Cebuano Literature, therefore, encompasses not only those Visayas
and Mindanao-based writers writing in Cebuano, but all written output in
Cebuano, wherever its source.
 Linambay (desensitizer) with the moro-moro
 Moro-moro -a play that became popular in the Philippines during the
Spanish colonial period where the Moros were portrayed as perpetual
villains who always lost to Christians in the end. It depicts battles, in a
rather comedic way, between Christians and Moros as Muslims in the
Philippines prefer to be called.
 Vicente Sotto Sr.- Father of Cebuano Literature
 1902- Gugma sa Yutang Natawhan (Love For One’s Own Country)
 The Pulahanes- The Reds (Teatro Junquera)

Actors
 MAMING (1901) by Sotto- was a story of a devoted Catholic couple, who
were so obedient and respectful to the men of the church resulted to the
seduction of their daughter to a Spanish friar. The story caught the attention of
the public as it reflected the realities of that time.
 First example of sugilanon and later into the sugilambong
 He attacked the decadent forms of linambay
 LINAMBAY- refers to the Cebuano-Visayan version of the
Tagalog moro-moro or komedya
 GUGMA SA YUTANG NATAWHAN-Sotto was charged for
sedition for this work as it was perceived to have encouraged the
assassination of pro-American collaborators.
 January 1, 1902- Played at Teatro Junquera, played by the

Two More Plays were written by Sotto:
 ELENA- which deals of a girl’s love for an insurrecto

 AURORA- which deals with a scandal involving the priests and nuns of the
Colegio dela Immaculada Concepcion
III. American Colonial Period
 1901- ANG SUGA- the 1st Cebuano newspaper had its first
issue on June 16, 1901. It was published by Don Vicente
Yap Sotto, the Father of Cebuano Journalism, Language
and Literature. His grandson and namesake, Vicente Castelo
Sotto III more known as Tito Sotto also became a man of
arts, having wrote songs, among them "Magkaisa" which
became the theme song of the 1986 People Power Revolt.

 Opened the eyes of the public to the fact that the Cebuanos
could actually express their sentiments in their own
language.

 1934- 1ST short story writing contest
 Marcel Navarra- Toyom Carcar
-Father of Modern Cebuano Writing
-”Ug Gianud Ako” (“ And I Was Carried Away”)-about a
modernist woman
-wrote 80 short stories in 20 years
TWO GROUPS:
 LUDABI- Lubas sa Dagang Bisaya (40-70 years old)
 BATHALAD- Bathalan-ong Halad sa Dagang- penmanship
 -godly; batan-ong panuwat ages 16-up
