INTRODUCTION

3
✘ Pandemic COVID-19 has a huge impact on all lines of life, both in the economic,
social, health, and education.
✘ Due to this pandemic, educators (in this case lecturers) must be able to organize
an effective and efficient learning process and be able to adapt to the current
environment quickly and precisely.

4
✘ Certain efforts need to be made in the learning process so that
students can receive knowledge well so that educational goals can be
achieved.
✘ One of the efforts that can be done is to use the appropriate recitation
or assignment method adapting according to current conditions.

5
✘ Assignments can be given to students in various forms.
✘ In the current pandemic, giving suitable assignments can be
done by giving independent assignments, that is the
assignment that can be done without needing to meet face-
to-face with lecturers.

6
✘ The given assignments do not need to be many so that
students do not feel burdened by the learning process
during this pandemic.
✘ One form of assignment that is suitable to be given is to
compose an infographic.

7
✘ Infographics are a medium used to contain a collection of
important information by combining text, graphics,
schematics, tables into a simple display.
✘ The developed infographic aims to increase the
effectiveness of delivering messages to readers.

8
✘ According to [1], infographics are a form of information
delivery that displays the application of good graphic
design to improve human ability to understand a certain
pattern.
✘ Infographics have become a new trend that can be used in
the learning process, including Biology of The Cell
courses. [2]

9
✘ Based on the analysis of the semester learning plan for
the Biology of The Cell course at the Universitas
Maritim Raja Ali Haji (UMRAH), it appears that the
material presented in Biology of The Cell contains a lot
of information that needs to be explained contextually,
so it is necessary to provide a method that can make
students understand it simply even though they cannot
observe it directly in everyday life without the help of
adequate tools.

10
✘ This is the basis that the Biology of The Cell material
needs to be properly visualized by students through the
assignment of compiling infographics.
✘ This study aims to determine student self-efficacy
regarding the assignment of infographic preparation in
the Biology of The Cell course.

11
2.

METHODS
✘ This descriptive research was conducted from June-
December 2020.
✘ This study involved 31 students who took the Biology of
The Cell course in the Odd Semester 2020-2021 at the
Universitas Maritim Raja Ali Haji who were taken by
purposive sampling.

13
✘ Data were obtained through questionnaires distributed
online to students after attending Biology of The Cell
lectures for one semester.
✘ The data obtained in the form of student self-efficacy was
then analyzed descriptively and quantitatively.
✘ The aspects of the assessment obtained were then
categorized into a modified interpretation of [3] in Table 1.

14

3.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

✘ Students' self-efficacy towards assignments in the form
of infographics is seen from ten modified questions from
[4].
✘ This is useful for knowing the extent of student
satisfaction after working on infographic assignments in
the Biology of The Cell course.
✘ The results of the analysis can be seen in Table 2.

17
Table 2. Results of Analysis on Student Self-Efficacy on Assignments
in the Form of Infographics

18
✘ Based on Table 2, it can be seen that students gave good self-
efficacy towards infographic assignments in general.
✘ A total of 17 students (54.8%) strongly agree with the
statement that they can feel a high motivation to learn.
✘ Then, with the same number and percentage (54.8%) students
felt that they were able to improve their visual literacy to
understand the concepts studied.
✘ Both of these are by the opinion [5] that infographics can be
prepared using graphic design to produce a good visual
appearance. Infographics contribute to learning motivation
and improvement of visual literacy, evaluation, persuasion,
and visual communication. 19
✘ Then, 19 students (61.3%) strongly agreed that this
infographic assignment could increase their imagination to
understand the abstract Biology of The Cell concepts.
✘ A total of 23 students (74.2%) felt that giving this infographic
assignment could increase their creativity in compiling a
good infographic. [4] also revealed that infographics can
increase the imagination and creativity of students when
asked to make an infographic.
✘ This result is also supported by the opinion of [6] that the
human brain can recognize and understand patterns and their
relationships, especially in visual forms that support students'
imaginations in compiling infographics based on the material 20
✘ With an attractive and simple presentation, the complex
Biology of The Cell materials can be simplified into an
infographic display that can be created by students according
to their respective abilities.
✘ Of course, this is also supported by data as many as 22
students (71%) strongly agree that through giving
assignments in the form of infographics, they can master new
skills that have never been found in everyday life.
✘ The author directs students to create this infographic using a
simple application, namely Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
✘ It aims to facilitate access for students to focus on making
simple infographics without thinking about downloading 21
✘ However, based on the results of interviews with some of
these students, it was found that two other applications were
also used besides those instructed by the author, namely
Canva and CorelDraw.
✘ Canva is used by 20 people (64.51%), CorelDraw is used by
7 people (22.58%) and the rest use PowerPoint.
✘ The Canva and CorelDraw applications were new
applications that they had never studied before.
✘ This of course also supports the positive learning process felt
by students as indicated by data as many as 64.5% of students
feel this way.
✘ Through the assignment of compiling this infographic,
22
✘ Then, as many as 20 people (64.5%) strongly agree that this
infographic is a tool that can present scientific information.
✘ According to [5], infographics can be used as a scientific
research tool.
✘ Students are asked to present material from reference sources
following the direction of the lecturer.
✘ For example, the textbook written by [7] contains all
information related to Biology of The Cell courses, starting
from the structure, function, and working mechanism of each
cell component being studied.
✘ This book is very dense in content so that with this
infographic assignment, students can present a simple display 23
✘ Furthermore, as many as 21 students (67.7%) felt that the
material presented from books and teaching materials
provided by the lecturers could be simplified into an
infographic display that was effective to understand.
✘ A total of 18 students (58.1%) also felt that with this
infographic assignment, it was easier for them to understand
the material than the material or information presented
through plain text.
✘ This can help students to understand complex materials into
simpler ones, which were rated by 20 people (64.5%).
✘ Students also feel that they can present infographics that are
made to help me understand the complex Biology of The Cell 24
✘ All aspects of this assessment are in line with the opinion of
[8] that infographics have advantages both in terms of display
presentation which can present materials in a more organized
manner so that informative messages can be received by
others effectively.
✘ Infographics can simplify complex information so that it is
easily understood by anyone. Based on the average
percentage of student self-efficacy analysis results of 63.54%
are in a good category.

25
4.

CONCLUSION
✘ This study concludes that the students' self-efficacy towards
assignments in the form of compiling infographics in the
Biology of The Cell course is in a good category.
✘ This can be seen from the positive motivation, creativity,
imagination, and learning process felt by students during the
Biology of The Cell course.
✘ The results of this study can be used as a basis for further
research related to infographics in the learning process both
in schools and universities.
