defined and that was to create something
that uplifted the spirit, something
aesthetically pleasing and entertaining.

In the kind of art that we have today, the Filipino artists’ role is four-
fold:
1. The PERSONAL
2. The SOCIAL
3. The PHYSICAL
4. The IMMATERIAL

The artist expresses what he or she feels.


2. The Social

The artist expresses what he or she sees


around him/ her
3. The Physical

The artists finds a need to create something not only pleasing to look at but
something useful as well.
4. The Immaterial
The artist gives form to the immaterial, the hidden truth of the universe,, and
the spiritual force that inhabits the world.

National Artists of the Philippines

•Order of National Artist – it has been


established by virtue of Presidential
Proclamation No. 1001’ s. 1972
National Artists of the Philippines

The Order of National Artists is the highest award conferred by the President
of the Philippines to the nation’s artists.
What does it take to be a National Artist?

1. Living artists who have been Filipino citizens for


the last ten years prior to nomination as well as
those who have died after the establishment of the
award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the time
of their death.

thousand pesos (P100,000.00) net of
taxes, for living awardees;

thousand pesos (P75,000) net of
taxes, for posthumous awardees,

 A monthly life pension, medical and


hospitalization benefits.
