EXAMPLES OF SCIENCE FICTION
SCIENCE FICTOON AND “COGNITIVE
ESTRANGEMENT”

-According to “The Science Fiction Handbook”,

Suvin defines science fiction as “ a literature of
“cognitive estrangement”, a literature that places
readers in a world different from our own in
ways that stimulate thought about the nature of
these differences, causing us to view our world
from a perspective.”
What is cognitive estrangement?

- A narrative logic, characteristic of science

fiction, whereby devices used in the story are
afforded plausibility by their being placed in the
context of the fictional setting, which is
envisioned to be scientifically consistent.
-Freedman further describes science fiction as the
kind wherein “cognitive estrangement is noy only
present but dominant.”
-The setting is not limited to the place where the
story is set, but the social, moral, and ideological
background of the story.
- A story is set in a world where children and
teenagers are often pitted against each other
in a deadly contest like “The Hunger Games”, this
science fiction world is actually a commentary
- On the real world where we reside, where
people watch reality television and make real
people into celebrities/commodities. “ The
Hunger Games” can actually tell us a lot about
the real world.
DYSTOPIAN SCIENCE FICTION

- According to “The Science Fiction Handbook,

dystopian science fiction is when a utopian
dream becomes a nightmare. They further write:
1. If utopian societies are typically designed to
enable the maximum fulfilment of individual
human potential, dystopian societies impose
oppressive conditions that interfere with that
fulfilment. These oppressive conditions are
usually extensions or exaggerations of
conditions that already exist in the real world
- allowing the dystopian text to critique real-world
situations by placing them within the
defamiliarizing context of an extreme fictional
society.
- “The Handmaid’s Tale” for example, is a dystopian
society that uses Christian ideology to justify a
strict social hierarchy that includes the use of
a “handmaiden” is a sex slave since she is
considered the “female sinner”. This was
supposedly inspired by the pro-life movement in
the USA, but also has resonance in other societies
that use religion to justify a strict social structure
that oppresses women.
WHY HORROR STORIES ARE GOOD FOR YOU?

- Some people think that horror stories are

dreadful and should not be read by young adults,
while some people would say that reading horror
stories is good for you.
- The leading speculative fiction publisher, Tor,
posted an article by Greg Ruth titled, “Horror
is Good for You’.
- Often, children feel powerless, and reading
horror stories teach children how to brave in a
scary world.
-For example, a story all about monsters
reminded that are really monsters in the real
world, like murderers, drug syndicates, or
even war.
