How Penicillin Was Discovered
In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming was studying Staphylococcus bacteria growing
in culture dishes. He noticed that a mold called Penicillium was also growing in
some of the dishes. A clear area existed around the mold because all the
bacteria that had grown in this area had died. In the culture dishes without the
mold, no clear areas were present.
Fleming hypothesized that the mold must be producing a chemical that killed
the bacteria. He decided to isolate this substance and test it to see if it would
kill bacteria. Fleming transferred the mold to a nutrient broth solution. This
solution contained all the materials the mold needed to grow. After the mold
grew, he removed it from the nutrient broth and then added the broth to a
culture of bacteria. He observed that the bacteria in the culture died. Fleming's
experiments were later used to develop antibiotics.
1.State the question or problem that Fleming investigated.

2. What was Fleming's hypothesis?

3. How was the hypothesis tested?

4. Write a statement that summarizes the results of the

experiment.

5. This experiment lead to the development of what major

medical advancement?

6. Students are thereafter introduced about scientific method

and explain why?
Which of these instructions is better?
.Put some water in a beaker

.Using a measuring cylinder, pour 100ml of water

into a 250ml beaker.
Group Task
• Group 1 :
• Write a proper scientific method for making a cup of tea.
• Make sure you use as much detail as possible and remember
what we have been through today
• Group 2: Joe spun a coin on the table and watched as it
slowed down and settled. He did this many times, and then
wrote down as many questions as he could about the spinning
coin.
• Group 3

• Design an experiment for Inertia in Liquids

• Or
• Plan an investigation for
• Are Bounty paper towels more absorbent than generic paper
towels?

Some say that if you listen to the sound of a cricket chirping,
you can determine the temperature. Is this true or is it just an
urban (science) legend? Do any other factors affect how fast a
cricket will chirp, such as humidity, wind, atmospheric pressure,
or nearby crickets?
