INFINITIVE and GERUND

 Fiilere “-ma, -me, -mak, -mek” ekleyerek isim

yapmak için:

infinitive (to+V)
ya da
gerund (V+ing)
kullanılır.
A. to infinitive

Fiilin “to” almış halidir.

to go – to eat – to sleep
• Usage:

1) Amaç belirtmek için kullanılır. (-mak için)

I’ll visit John to give his present.

He comes here to see his girlfriend.
2. Bazı fiillerden sonra to infinitive kullanılır.

I want to be a doctor.
The doctor advised me to do exercise.
She agreed to come with us.
3. Sıfatlardan sonra gelen fiil ile to infinitive kullanılır.

It’s nice to meet you.

I’m glad to see Jane.
He is sorry to hear the news.
 B. gerund (Verb+ing)
1. Bazı fiillerden sonra gerund kullanılır:
admit - appreciate - avoid - delay - deny - dislike - enjoy - fancy - finish – give up
imagine - involve - keep - mention - mind - miss - postpone - practise - recommend
- regret - suggest

Jason always suggests watching a film.

I have finished doing my homework.
My father is going to give up smoking.
2. “like / love / dislike / prefer / hate”den sonra genel tercihlerden bahsetmek için kullanılır.

I like drinking milk.

3. «in, on, at, of , about, to, for» gibi Edatlardan sonra gerund kullanılır.

I am interested in playing chess.

What do you think of dancing?
 4. “go”dan sonra aktiviteler için.

My mum went shopping.

They go dancing every weekend.
 5. Bazı ifadeler ile gerund kullanılır.

I can’t stand waiting for people.

He is used to going everywhere on foot.
6. See/watch/listen/hear/find someone/something doing something.
(Birisini/Bir şeyi, bir eylemi yaparken izleme/ dinleme…)

I saw Tom dancing.

(Tom’u dansederken/dansediyorken gördüm.)
I heard the bell ringing.

BUT
I saw Tom get into his car.
(Tom’un arabasına bindiğini gördüm.)
 C. Exceptions
Stop

Tim stopped to call Jane. (Tim, Jane’i aramak için durdu.)

Tim stopped calling Jane. (Tim, Jane’i aramayı bıraktı.)
 Try
I tried to sleep, but I couldn’t.
(Uyumaya uğraştım/çabaladım…)
We tried calling her but the phone was broken down.
(Onu aramayı denedik ...)
Need
Martin needs to study more.
(Martin’in daha fazla çalışması gerekli.)

The windows need cleaning.

(Pencerelerin temizlenmesi gerekli.)
