Laparoscopy
Also Called: Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Band-aid Surgery Keyhole Surgery
Definition
is a modern surgical technique in which operations in
the abdomen are performed through small incisions (usually 0.51.5 cm) as compared to the larger incisions needed in laparotomy.
Continuation
Keyhole surgery uses images displayed on TV
the abdominal or pelvic cavities, whereas keyhole surgery performed on the thoracic or chest cavity is called thoracoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery belong to the broader field of endoscopy.
Continuation
There are a number of advantages to the patient
with laparoscopic surgery versus an open procedure. These include reduced pain due to smaller incisions and hemorrhaging, and shorter recovery time.

The surgeon would carefully examine organs and
instruments can be slit. The additional instruments may be used to loop organs out of the way for better visualization of the underlying tissues or to perform other operative procedures such as removing scar tissues, taking biopsies or draining abnormal fluid. When the laparoscope and other instruments are removed, a special gas bulb will be left briefly to allow carbon dioxide to escape the abdomen.
