OPENING PRAYER
God, we praise You for giving us the
opportunity and privilege to learn.
Send forth Your spirit so we may successfully
acquire knowledge and skills effectively, and
eventually perform our roles as students better.
Amen.

QUARTER 4
KEY UNDERSTANDING

The impulse-momentum relationship

helps predict and interpret the motion
of interacting objects.

KEY QUESTIONS

• How do projectiles move?

• What determines the range and
maximum height of a projectile?
• What affects the momentum of a
body?
• Is a momentum of a system always
conserved?
• Does the law of conservation of
momentum hold true in collisions
and explosions?
PROJECTILE MOTION
Projectile motion is a type
of motion experienced by
an object (called projectile)
that is thrown and moves
along a curved path.
PROJECTILE MOTION
This curved path is called
trajectory and the shaped
formed is called as a
parabola.
PROJECTILE MOTION

When a projectile is
moving, it moves under the
sole influence of gravity. It
also moves in two
dimensions, both horizontal
and vertical.
PROJECTILE MOTION

An object moves
along a curved path
under the influence of
gravity.
PROJECTILE MOTION
TWO TYPES OF OBJECTS MOVING IN PROJECTILE MOTION

1 Projectile thrown horizontally called as HALF PROJECTILE.

Examples: ball kicked at the edge pf the cliff, object launched horizontally from
a building

2 Projectile launched at an angle also called as FULL PROJECTILE.

Examples: player shooting a basketball, tennis racket hitting a tennis ball, golf
ball hit by a golf club
HALF PROJECTILE
1. The maximum vertical distance
reached by the projectile is called the
height (h). It is measured in meters
(m).
2. The horizontal distance reached by
the projectile is called range (R). It is
measured in meters (m).
3. The initial vertical velocity Vy of the
projectile is zero.
HALF PROJECTILE
4. The initial horizontal velocity of the
projectile is Vx .It is measured in
meters per second (m/s).
5. The initial horizontal velocity of the
projectile is constant. Thus, the
initial horizontal velocity is equal to
final horizontal velocity (Vx = Vx).
HALF PROJECTILE
6. The acceleration experienced by the
projectile is the acceleration due to
gravity which is equal to 9.8 m/s2.
7. The time it took to reach the ground
is the time of flight. This is measured
in seconds (s).
FORMULAS FOR HALF PROJECTILE
The following are set of equations that are useful in describing the motion of a projectile that is thrown horizontally
(half projectile). These equations can be used depending on the given.

WHAT TO FIND GIVEN EQUATION

vx = initial horizontal velocity (m/s)
R = range (m) R = vxt
t = time (s)

vy = final vertical velocity (m/s) g = acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s2) vy = gt

t = time (s)

vy = final vertical velocity (m/s) g = acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s2)

h = height (m)

g = acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s2) h =1/2 gt2

h = height (m)
t = time (s)

g = acceleration due to gravity (9.8m/s2)

t = time (s) t = √2h/g
h = height (m)

FULL PROJECTILE

FULL PROJECTILE OR PROJECTILE LAUNCHED AT

AN ANGLE

An object released at an angle from the horizontal and is

allowed to move with the sole influence of gravity
following a parabolic path is known to be moving in full
projectile.
FULL PROJECTILE
1. The maximum vertical distance reached by the projectile is
called the maximum height (h). It is measured in meters (m).

2. The horizontal distance reached by the projectile is called range

(R). It is measured in meters (m).

3. The initial velocity of the projectile is at an angle, θ. It can be

expressed in the horizontal and vertical axes as Vx and Vy,
respectively. It is measured in meter/second (m/s).
FULL PROJECTILE
4. The initial vertical velocity is Vy, of the projectile is measured in
meters per second, m/s. Its magnitude decreases as the projectile
goes up and increases as it comes down. At the maximum height,
the vertical velocity is zero.

5. The initial horizontal velocity of the projectile is Vx . It is

measured in meters per second, m/s. The horizontal velocity of
the projectile is constant. Thus, the initial horizontal velocity is
equal to final horizontal velocity (Vx = Vx).
FULL PROJECTILE
6. The acceleration experienced by the projectile is the acceleration
due to gravity which is equal to 9.8 m/s2.

7. The time it took to reach the ground is the time of flight. This is
measured in seconds (s).

8. The total time of flight (T) which is the time it takes the
projectile to reach the maximum height and go back to the
ground is the total time of flight, T. T is twice the value of the
time of flight (T=2t).
FORMULAS FOR FULL PROJECTILE
These are the equations that are useful in describing the motion of a full projectile. These equations can be used
depending on the given.
