THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
 The system that returns fluids that have been leaked into
tissues of the body back to the bloodstreams.

 Helps transport large molecules like lipids, hormones to the

blood.

 Lymphatic vessels, the lymph nodes, the spleen, the

tonsils and the thymus are organs in the lymphatic system
which help the system to accomplish those functions.

 Some of the organs of the lymphatic systems contains

lymphocytes for elimination of any foreign materials and also
fight against infections in the body (immune system
functions).

 Lymphatic vessels consist of endothelial cells that overlap on
each other to form easily opened minivalves.

 The arrangement of these cells

permit the flow of lymph
(fluids in the lymphatic vessels)
in one direction (ie. Towards the
heart).

 They also contain valves that

help prevent the back flow of
lymph.
PROCESS OF LYMPH CIRCULATION
 The drainage of lymph into lymphatic vessels occur due to
difference in pressures between the interstitial space and
the lymphatic vessels.

 When the pressures in the interstitial spaces become

higher than in the lymphatic vessels (ie. when more fluids
leak in the interstitial spaces), the endothelial minivalves
of the lymphatic vessels open up and allow fluids to get in.

 As the fluids rush into the vessels, the pressure in the

vessel exceeds the one in the interstitial minivalves close
to prevent the flow of the lymph back into the tissues.

 The lymph travels through to the lymphatic nodes where

foreign substances are filtered.

 The lymph travels along small lymphatic vessels to large
lymphatic vessels until it reaches the heart.

NB:
 There are specialized lymphatic
vessels the helps for the
transport of lipid called lacteals.

 There is no pump pushing lymph

through the lymphatic system.
Therefore, the skeletal muscles
squeeze the lymphatic vessels to
push lymph through it vessels.
