Introduction
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY : The proper definition
describes medical terminology as language used to
describe anatomical structures, procedures,
conditions,process & treatments in the medical field.

Medical terms are built from four word parts.


 Those word parts are;
• Prefix
• Word root
• Suffix
• Combing vowel
What is medical Billing& coding
 MEDICAL BILLING:Is the practice of
helping physicians & health care centres get
reimbursed of services given to their
patients.
 MEDICAL CODING:Translation of medical
terms of diagnoses and procedures into code
numbers from strandardised code sets.
 OBJECTIVE OF CODING:
1.Provider: To prepare a standardised “bill” for
services given to a patient.
2.Payer:To determine the amount to be paid to
the provider.
Types of medical codes
 CPT (Current procedural
terminology)
 ICD ( International classification of
disese)
 HCPCS( Health care common
procedure coding system)
 Diagonoses codes- ICD
 Procedure codes- CPT , HCPCS.
BASIC CODING GUIDELINES
 Are 3-7 digits;
 Digit 1 is alpha;
 Digit 2 is numeric;
 Digit 3-7 are alpha or numeric
 A decimal is used after the third character.
 Examples:
o A78 –Q fever :
o A69.21 –Meningitis due to lyme disease: and
o S52.131A – Displaced fracture of neckof right
radius,initial encounter for closed fracture.
ICD 10: VOLUME 1
 The instruction manual.
 Contains an introduction to the classificaton
andinstructions regarding how to use the
classification to code death certificate,hospital
medical records and other forms of health
information.
