Brainstorm: What problems have you encountered in terms of
timing and pacing during your presentation?
Advice (Beforehand):
- Practice for overall timing, but also record a 2-minute
segment. The average native speaker uses about 140 words
per minute.
PRESENTATION - Arrive early and check the AV equipment (if possible)
SKILLS: TIMING AND - Use positive visualization; never think “I’m going to be
PACING terrible!”
- Take deep breaths…and smile  (releases endorphins)
- Remember that it’s normal to be nervous…and everyone
else is

Advice (During)
1. Set intermediate time targets (i.e. start at 1:30: video at
1:35, questions at 1:42, conclusion at 1:45) – adjust to get
back on track
2. Use the clock! (Perception of time…)
3. Rule of three – three main sections to your presentation
PRESENTATION 4. Build in time for digressions
SKILLS: TIMING AND 5. Create and present an outline to be shown at the start

• Structuring Your Presentation
Very much like an essay! You need:
1. A comprehensive introduction
- Positive opening; overview; approach; outcome; audience
expectations
2. Main points and detailed supporting evidence
PRESENTATION - Depends on presentation type (i.e. background info – main
SKILLS: TIMING AND argument – detail; seriousness of problem – 3 main effects)
PACING
3. An insightful conclusion
- Review of purpose; conclusions of your work; next stages;
questions; thank audience
And of course what ties everything together…discourse
markers (p. 37 – Sequence)

PRESENTATION 1: ELEVATOR PITCH

• Description on p. 42/43
• Choose an existing organization (smaller organization…not the U.N.)
• Use the organizer on p. 43
• You will also give a description of the organization/how it’s helping people –
find info from at least 3 sources
• Around 5-7 minutes total
• Record yourself using video; additional visuals not necessary (i.e. PowerPoint)
• Focus: organization in speaking, discourse markers, similes/metaphors
• Due end of the day, Friday, May15 (D2L dropbox *or* Vimeo)
• Rubric: More info Tuesday (needs to be modified!)
