CHINESE

NEW YEAR
Gabriela Hernandez Tobon
Salome Echeverri Garcia
Its origin dates back 4,000
years.

Legend has it that there was a

terrifying beast called Nian that
lived in the depths of the sea
and when the end of winter
came, it attacked people and
crops to feed itself. One day
they found out that Nian feared
the color red, fire, and riots..
According to the Chinese
calendar we are in the year
4716.
The Chinese New Year is
governed by the lunar calendar,
which, unlike the Wester
Gregorian, used in most western
countries, is based on the cycles
of de moon.
In total, a lunar year has 354
days.
To celebrate Chinese New
Year, the more people and
noise the better!
The atmosphere in the
streets is filled with joy with
parades, concerts and
exhibitions. Throwing
firecrackers is the order of de
day.
