Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Smart So much potential
STRUGGLES
• Easily overwhelmed
• Space out in class
• Loose things constantly and
• Find it hard to focus.
• Being ‘smart’ isn’t enough.
WHAT IS ADHD?
• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
• It is a neurodevelopmental disorder.
• Parts of the ADHD brain develop slower than the neurotypical brains.
• Three primary characteristics –
Inattention Impulsivity Hyperactivity
So what happens to ‘all that potential’?
Behaviour is affected by the brain.
And their brain has ADHD.
ADHD affects 5-8% of the global population.
What can we do about it?
• Firstly, we need to be aware that ADHD exists.
• It is not bad parenting, lack of discipline or spanking.
• ADHD affects more than just our ability to focus.
• It impairs executive functions of the brain like planning, prioritizing and our ability to
sustain efforts towards a goal.
• It affects our ability to regulate our emotions, behaviour and sleep.
Good news - ADHD is highly treatable.
• Stimulant medications
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
• Coaching
• Meditation
• Regular Exercise
• Making lists for all the activities
• Keeping a timer
ADHD brains have a lot to offer the world.
• Generous, Creative, Funny.
• ADHDers are 300% more likely to start their own businesses.
• Like working with new ideas.
• They are great at tackling tasks that are urgent.
• Wrestling problems that are challenging and
• Dedicating themselves to projects that are of their personal interest.
• High risk appetite – fun stories to narrate.
