This document discusses the history of taxonomy from ancient times to the modern era. It outlines that pre-Linnaean taxonomy involved early classification systems from cultures like ancient China and Egypt. Carolus Linnaeus is considered the founder of modern taxonomy, introducing binomial nomenclature in the 18th century. The 19th-20th centuries saw further developments like cytology, chemistry, and phylogenetics, referred to as modern taxonomy or phylocode. Overall the document provides a brief overview of the origins and evolution of biological classification systems.

Bankura Christian College Mob: 9474492745 Introduction • The History of Taxonomy dates back to the origin of Human language. • Carolus Linnaeus founded the modern taxonomy and according history of taxonomy can be divided into Pre Linnaean and Post Linnaean Period. • The Difference between Pre Linnaean and Post Linnaean Period is the Introduction of Term Evolution. Modern Taxonomy • 19th and 20th Century is known as period of Modern Taxonomy due to the introduction of: a) Cytotaxonomy b) Chemotaxonomy c) Phylogeny Modern taxonmy is therefore also called Phylocode. Pre Linnaean Taxonomy • The earliest traces of taxonomy are not from the West, but from the East. • Shen Nung, Emperor of China around 3000 BC wrote Materia and Medica and included name of 365 plants. • Around 1500 BC medicinal plants were illustrated on wall paintings in Egypt. Western Taxonomist • Aristotle (384–322 BC) • Greek philosopher Aristotle was the first to classify all living things, and some of his groups are still used today, like the vertebrates and invertebrates, which he called animals with blood and without blood. • Plinius (23–79 AD) published Naturalis Historia, a work of 160 voumes, in which he described several plants and gave them Latin names. • One of the earliest authors was Caesalpino (1519–1603) in Italy, who is sometimes called "the first taxonomist". • The English naturalist John Ray (1627–1705) wrote several important works through his life. His most important contribution was the establishment of species as the ultimate unit of taxonomy. Linnaean Taxonomy • For nomenclatural reasons two works of Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778, Fig. 4) are regarded as the starting points of modern botanical and zoological taxonomy: the global flora Species Plantarum, published in 1753 and the tenth edition of Systema Naturae in 1758 including global fauna. • these books a binary form of species names called "trivial names" for both plants and animals. For each species he created an epithet that could be used together with the genus name. Carolus Linnaeus
