Activity- Option 1

• Find images that represent gender roles in


popular culture and place around the room
• Move around the classroom to observe the
images and record what you perceive as the
gender-role message from each image
• Discuss the various images as a class and the
different perspectives recorded. Additional
questions may include:
- Where do we learn these gender roles?
- Who teaches us these stereotypes? E.g.
entertainment, sports, media?
- Why may it be perceived ‘different’ or
‘strange’ to see boys playing with
Barbie dolls and girls playing with
monster trucks?

levels of young people, e.g. messages
regarding body image, nutrition and mental
health.
• Explore the impact of media messages
associated with physical activity, outdoor
recreation and sport in Australia and propose
how this might influence the health
behaviours and actions of young people

Media Review

• Working in groups of 3 you will conduct a media


review within your group for a specific area:
• body image
• nutrition
• mental health
• physical activity and sport in Australia
• Each group will have a specific set of questions to
answer to support them throughout the review (See
Appendix- media critique questions on eVe and on
the next slides).
• In your groups, create an informative and engaging
way of presenting this information.

Review Questions
 Find two media messages (this can be in the form of an article, video, TV show,
news event) that are representative of your topic
 What are the main messages being portrayed? Who is portraying these
messages?
 Are they positive/negative? How?
 Could they be interpreted differently? Who by? Why? How could this impact an
individual?
 What is the impact of these media messages for young people on their:
o Health and wellbeing
o Safety
o Physical activity levels
