What is a Network?
• A network is formed by connecting computers together
• An internet is formed by connecting networks together
• Network infrastructure is the hardware(devices) that supports
networking and internet.

Why Network?
• When you network you can share:
• Files
• Resources(e.g. Printer and Scanner)
• Internet connections:
• You can enable Internet connection sharing by creating a
simple home network
• All your devices can share a single Internet connection

Why Network?
• Downloading is the process of copying
a file (any type of file) from a server on
the Internet to your device

Copy
• Uploading is the process of copying a

file (any type of file) from your device to
a server on the Internet.

Why Network?
• Streaming is the process of having a
file delivered to your device in a
constant and steady stream

Basic Network Technology
• Networks transfer data in small units called packets
• Data networks use TCP/IP (Transmission control
protocol/Internet Protocol) as their networking protocol
• Every computer that participates on a data network must have
an IP address

Basic Network Technology
• Finding Your IP Address
• An IP address is a unique identifier for a device connected to the internet.
• A function of an Internet Protocol (IP) address is Identifies a specific device
connected to a network.
• You can find your computer’s IP address through the Control Panel
Ethernet Wi-Fi

Types of Networks
• LANs (Local Area Network) are private networks
e.g. “university of Nizwa network”

• WANs (Wide Area Network) are public networks

Connecting the Internet to Your LAN

• Modems
• Private LAN connects to the public WAN by using Modem.
• A modem is a device that converts the incoming signal into a digital
signal that can be sent to a computer or to router.
• You need an ISP When connecting home Wi-Fi to the Internet.
• Modems can be installed inside a computer.

Connecting the Internet to Your LAN

• Routers
• A router is a device that forwards data packets from one computer
network to another and enable connection sharing.

Wired Connections – Ethernet
• Ethernet Standards
• Ethernet is connecting computers using cables (wires).
Bandwidth Ethernet Standards
1Gbps Gigabit Ethernet
100Mbps Fast Ethernet
10Mbps 10Base-T Ethernet

• Ethernet connections are recommended for transmitting important and

sensitive data or high-volume streaming

Wired Connections - Ethernet
• Network Interface Card (NIC)
• Sends and receives data between your
computer and the network
• Includes an Ethernet port (Network
Port)

Wireless Connections – Wi-Fi
• Wi-Fi gives us networking without wires
• Most routers can be used to set up a Wi-Fi network
• A LAN that supports Wi-Fi is called a Wireless LAN (WLAN)
• WLANs use 2 different frequency bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz

Wireless Connections – Wi-Fi
• Connecting Your Computer to a WLAN
1. Available wireless networks 2. Click a network to select it, and 3. If the network is secured,
display in a pop-up window then click Connect to connect enter the password (network
when you click the icon to the network security key)
